Quartet2Protracker-converter needed! :)

Post by lotek_style »

Hi Coders :)

Is somebody out there who is interested in writing such
a tool? I guess it does not matter on which system... the
most important thing is that the programme has to do
correct conversions so that no re-editing by hand is
necessary afterwards.

Not good enough to code one myself, but the attached doc is a breakdown of the Noisetracker/Protracker file format - should help get this started

linky cos no attachments :- http://www.niceguyuk.ukshells.co.uk/dmg/MOD-FORM.zip

Can anyone do a similar doc for Quartet format?

The Mr Music player by Electronic Images has some info on Quartet format as well as their revamped version.

You might have to read between the lines in their GFA based conversion tools which convert Quartet into Mr Music format.

Also look on Exotica.no for their breakdown of the format in the "exotic formats" section. Has some Amiga replay code for it

Thanks Mug - I don't suppose you have the aforementioned Mr Music player/GFA conversion utils do you?

I honestly thought I'd got it on my site .. must be on PC at home instead.

Will upload it here (if attachments are working) later on tonight before I get stuck into Mercenaries (damn addictive game!).

If attachments not working, send me a PM and I'll bung it to your email account.

Mug has given me the Quartet -> Mr Music conversion stuff, and I have a few docs on MOD format (and a little bit on Quartet format). Hopefully this should be enough information to try and put something together

I'm initially aiming for a PC based tool to do the conversions (my PC coding skills are way better than my ST ones). Mug asked if he can have a batch conversion mode for him and Lotek, which I'll attempt once I've got one-at-a-time conversion working first. Looking forward to hearing OCWAS Quartet tunes as MODs!

No timescales on this one, its a "little bits of code in my spare time" production, so I'll let you know.

Right, I've re-uploaded the Mr Music zip file to my site but now has the GFA code extracted into plain ASCII format .LST files so you should now be able to work out what is being read in ..

When it's working .. you might want to work on an .EIT convertor into .MOD format too :)

Thanks for that, will take a look tonight while I get some (rare) free time

Ok, Unseen Menace provided me with scanned JPEGs of some notes he wrote a while back (many thanks!), and I've retyped them and converted to PDF format. You can get them here

I've started very early stages of code to do this conversion now, but I don't get a lot of free time to code so please be patient!

I've not forgotten - just doing little bits of coding in the rare moments of spare time!

Initial version is being coded for Linux, simply because this is the platform I run, but once this is finished, a Windows port should be trivial.

No batch mode for this first release, despite Mug's request. Something I want to visit once I've got the core conversion code working.

Screenshot of my desktop with the app in the middle of the screen :-D

The obligatory (but admittedly not very exciting) Windows version screenshot, just to keep Mug quiet!

Although there's not much to see on either of the last tweo screenshots, rest assured I've got the first parts of the Quartet loading code to work, and I can't wait to get home and code some more tonight..... :D

Great work guys :D All these years later, and this appears. Really a testament to the passion of us ST owners. I guess the ST will never leave us :).

Speaking of Quartet - didnt Sparky's son post here a while back in response to a thread that popped up requesting a compilation of all his Quartet tunes?

Linux UI - complete
Windows UI - 75% complete

Conversion code - 5% complete (hey, it reads a header correctly!)

I know it doesn't seem like a lot guys, but I code this on my laptop on the train journey to and from work, and my laptop battery sucks! Please be patient and I will deliver the tool we've all wanted for years.

Oh, and once again, kudos to Unseen Menace for his Quartet docs that he scanned and emailed to me.... :)

Tried Settel's code (anyone got any info on this guy btw?) and it seems to work a treat. Ok, so there's no UI, but the command line is straightforward enough.

If you Windows boys want to run it, I don't see why it wouldn't compile under CygWin. If this is something you want to do, PM me and I'll help out where needed.

As for myself, I'm off to leech all my old Quartet faves and convert them to MODs - thanks for ensuring I don't do any work today :D

I think that Settel's converter doesn't do 100% conversions. Perhaps a bit more tweaking on your part is needed?
is 73 Falcon patched atari games enough ? ^^

I've only got a small handful of Quartet files today to test with but they seemed to work. Unseen Menace is sending me some shortly, and I'll do more testing.

A little tweaking is still better than "by-hand" though - nothing is ever free
