Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
Is this possible? If so, how? Or is the format identical to 50HZ .YM?

Re: Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
SSB: You should talk to TAO... as far as I remember he tried it a few years ago but discovered some problems with newer more advanced AY tunes.

Re: Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
The most easy way is to use source-formats.
STC, SQT, PT1, PT2, PT3, STP, ASC, PSC, PSM, FLS, GTR, FTC, FXM and others.
They're on this site: http://zxtunes.com/
Example:
take a file http://zxtunes.com/downloads.php?id=1968
load into VortexTracker (on PC) ftp://ftp.untergrund.net/users/bulba/VT1.0beta19.7z
and export as SNDH.
Ready.
HOWEVER please note that although they sound almost identical on ZX with AY and on ZX with YM, such a song still will sound in different way on ST with YM.
That's why the tunes mostly require some "manual" converting too.
PS: This http://carpentry.republika.pl/ is a good example (the same BOF song like above) what are the differences between ZX+AY and ZX+YM.
However remember that it stil doesn't solve a problem in 100%.

Yerz: That was probably what Tao ment when he said you can't convert it 100% properly.

Tao is one of the best Atari ST chip musicians.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).
I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Hi,
Tao of Creamhq.de (cream demo group)
Maybe STSound can do some conversion? or the Jam player? both can rip out audio files (wave) from a chiptune!

Re: Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
(resurrecting an old thread)
I fiddled a bit with Vortextracker II, it works fine under Linux with Wine.
I loaded a few files and could convert them to SNDH. It worked well with VT set to 50Hz and chipfrequency to 2MHz.
The replay under Hatari with SNDPlay sounded almost identically compared to VTII (at least I could not detect any difference but i'm not audiophile)
Are the problems fixed?

Resurrecting an old thread AGAIN.
Well, not to SNHD but to YM. SoundMachine IV plays them well, on ST.
You take AY file. Load it into AY_EMUL (ZX Spectrum sound emulator by Sergey Bulba).
Press PL.
Press RMB on the title.
CONVERT TO YM6
Now You THINK You have the YM file. But no.
RENAME the YM file into *.LHA file.
Depacking it / taking out the file that was inside.
RENAMING IT into the *.YM.
Load into ST. Works fine.
__________EDIT_________
A site with AY files if required -
ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sincl ... /ay/games/

Re: Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
Longshot : You could hand the original demo/production to someone with a CT60, and run my x128 (speccy emu) port. I implemented an SNDH export function. IIRC it compensates for the difference in clockspeed as well (speccy tunes will be pitch-shifted otherwise)simonsunnyboy wrote:Is this possible? If so, how? Or is the format identical to 50HZ .YM?

Ain't no space like PeP-space.

Re: Converting Spectrum .AY to SNDH?
Ahh well, the Vortextracker experiments over a year ago showed me that it is probably safer to have ST specific replay routines for the original Spectrum tracker formats.shoggoth wrote:Longshot : You could hand the original demo/production to someone with a CT60, and run my x128 (speccy emu) port. So instead of converting complete .AY, it should be a conversion of those specific ZX tracker files.
At this time, i personally have close to zero motivation for active ST code. But I'll keep monitoring discussions and other things...
