Great idea :D

Unfortunately, I cant code at the level required for this contest, but will be watching closely. Atari demo records taking place in 2004 are very interesting :)

Maybe some old ST coders from the best groups can make an appearance here.

Agreed, this looks cool :)
Some may find sprites rather boring to look at, but I find the technical achievement fascinating :)

If someone wants to post up a sprite, I'll throw my sprite route at it. It won't win - its more optimised for huuuuge 4 plane sprites (as seen in Apathetic Games menu) - but I will bet it returns a respectable score :-)

Plus, I like the S.O.S. tune :)

The spriting bit has been optimised to hell by everyone. I expect the winner will have the fastest screen clearing rout.

Great idea Leonard ! I can't wait to see if someone will challenge you or even if someone will crack this demo !

Hey Thothy, could you explain how do you know the passcode is less or more (or equal) than 7 characters ? :-)

Hi Leonard!

Quite simple: I've spotted the routine that calculates a checksum for each entered password in your demo and then checks if this checksum has a certain value. If it's the wrong value, there's one red flash and you can enter another password - if it's the right value, the demo continues with "Loading, Decrypting and Depacking the Demo"...
So I wrote a little brute force program that calculates this checksum for all possible words and prints out all "good" passwords. I've already checked all "good" passwords up to 7 characters (e.g. 'W4KD2Q7'), but none of them seems to be the right (the demo stops loading with a red+black background). For 8 and more characters, I would need much more time, so brute-forcing does not work here :-(

BTW: How many letters has the right password?

BTW2: Great idea, this contest :-)

Hi thothy !

Nice to see you look at the code. It's funny to see your "W4KD2Q7" "first stage" working password.

How many letters ? :-) Well it's a secret info ! All I can say is the password does not look as your "random like" 7 letters proposition.

Good luck !

( If you think you can't use brute force for password cracking, maybe you can use brute force to beat the sprite record and so you'll get the password :-))

what you don't know....

Post by Gunstick »

.... is that I have a better than 220 sprite demo ready and that Leonard knows that :-)
So, it's easy for me to get the password. I just release the screen.

But I wanted to have something else than the SOS tune in it. So for the moment it's not released.

Btw, it was programmed on linux under steem.
Maybe I'll release it when there will be a Saint for linux, hahaha.

well if Ziggy wants to give it a try.

I will also release my source code when I publish the screen.
We are in an open source world, are we?

Some code you can already see, if you search for an YM replay routine I posted somewhere in this forum.
Because it's over 220 sprites with the scroll and music. So it has to get an optimization too.

mine is finished (since 2 months).

it just lacks the music.
Please suggest which music you would like to hear in the screen.
No sid voice or digidrums for obvious reasons :-)

humm don't have any idea about these obvious reasons. Why don't you put a 4 voices soundtrack ? :-)

Well the original madmax S.O.S tune may be perfect for that highly old-skool stuff !

by the way, release your screen fast because STGHOST may crack the password !! :-) If you release your demo i'll publish the password and so I'm sure to not loose 50euros ! :-)

oh yes I tried!... but not all the week-end, one must know when he has to stop (to drink, smoke, sleep... or worse! 8) )

a nice challenge Leonard!

I tried again a bit yesterday and finally found the algo used (and it's reversed method, thanks to the net!)

GO ON STGHOST !!!
