Real 3 button gamepad support for Atari ST

Post by masteries »

Via heavy modifications, a real 3 button gamepad is supported via the standard joystick port (port 0 - mouse port) in any ST and STE machine.

The third button is obtained via a combination of UP+DOWN at same time,

As an example, a video, Metal Slug for Atari STE being played with a 3 button gamepad:

FYI: This gamepad support 4 different buttons for Amiga computers, as well it is compatible with ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 as well.
Aslo, this can be used with all classic games too. As a multi-purpose retro platform gamepad.

Ready to use modified gamepads are available at marketplace,

Nice trick.

At some point, I imagined to combine the two joystick ports to have a d-pad (directions of joy0) and 6 actions buttons (directions of joy1, fire buttons of j0 and j1)

UP+DOWN might be a bit problematic in games that distinguish UP and DOWN. I'd probably only use that as a START or SELECT button in actual software but why not.

If i could fix the crash issues in my own SNES mapper project, I can add that feature easily.
