Doesn't have to be by Compo as i believe others have made this mod

Basically i'm looking for the Images to make the dual tos roms? 1.62 and 2.06 in English

They are everywhere, here for example: http://www.avtandil.narod.ru/tose.html

Otherwise just google: Atari TOS rom

Yes i know they are easily available for a single installation

I need the dual version that fits onto 2 x 27C020 32 pin chips, so that the chips have both TOS 1.62 AND TOS 2.06 on the same rom and you can switch between them via a switch

So is there a special version out there? or do i just use TOS 1.62 AND TOS 2.06 and somehow install the HI and LO versions together onto the 2 x chips ?

There is no special version, you just split it into even and odd bytes, and concatenate "even" images of both TOS versions, and "odd" images of both versions. You have to make a physical switch to alter highest address bit of EPROM in order to select lower or upper part of it (to choose TOS version to boot).

You could use this software to prepare the images on PC:

I did wonder!

OK well i have TOS 1.62 and 2.06 that i can burn onto regular roms

It's just how do i burn BOTH 1.62 and 2.06 HI and LO versions onto the 27C020 ?

Use cartman tool and split the files in high and low. Both low on the same chip and both high on the other. Put lo/hi from 2.06 on the same adress (0000) on the two chips. Same for 1.62 but on address 2000 and onwards. As techie_alison describe in the link you gave.

OK this may sound really dumb but how do i do that?

I have the rom images split as HI and LO but i have no idea how to set this address stuff up for 00000-1FFFF and 20000-3FFFF to get both images onto 1 chip

00000-1FFFF contains say 2.06, and 20000-3FFFF contains 1.62.

Assuming Windows:

copy /b tos206.hgh+tos162.hgh merged.hgh
copy /b tos206.low+tos162.low merged.low

... concatenates the files for high and low into merged.hgh and merged.low respectively. Adapt the file names to suit your need, obviously.

Windows yes

Can you explain what you mean by this?

copy /b tos206.hgh+tos162.hgh merged.hgh
copy /b tos206.low+tos162.low merged.low

These are commands for the Windows command prompt. Please google it; I'm not going to write a tutorial how to use the command prompt.

OK i'm just confused with this, i don't want to use the command prompt

I have both TOS 1.62 and 2.06 on the Willem PCB50 programmer and can quite easily burn either TOS 1.62 or 2.or onto regular roms

Can't i just burn TOS 1.62 and TOS 2.06 ODD onto the same 27C020 chip one after the other? and then the same again on the other (EVEN) chip ?

The bit i don't get is this " 00000-1FFFF contains say 2.06, and 20000-3FFFF contains 1.62 "

I can't see anything on the Willem PCB50 which allows me to set these "00000-1FFFF " parameters

I don't know your programmer but if it is the usual type of thing with hardware which plugs into a PC and software which runs on the PC:

Taking just one of the PROMs, you have a segment of TOS 1.62 code and a segment of TOS 2.06 code. Either one of these would be an exact fit in the EPROM type you would normally use, so you are going to use an EPROM double the normal size and put the TOS 1.62 code in the lower half of the bigger EPROM and the TOS 2.06 code in the upper half of the bigger EPROM.

Virtually all EPROM programmer software has the ability to copy a block of code from one area of the hex editor to another. If yours has, do this:

-Load the block of TOS 2.06 code into the EPROM programmer's software. By default, it will load it at address 00000=1FFFF
-Use your programmer software's COPY facility to copy the code in 00000-1FFFF to destination address 20000.
-At this point the lower and upper halves of the buffer both contain the TOS 2.06 code.
-Now load the TOS 1.62 code. It will load at address 00000, overwriting the lower block of TOS 2.06 code
-Now, the lower half of the buffer 00000-1FFFF contains TOS 1.62 code and the upper half of the buffer contains TOS 2.6 code.
-Program the EPROM
-Repeat until you have a full set of EPROMs programmed with TOS 1.62 in the lower half and TOS 2.06 in the upper half.

I would be amazed if someone has not already prepared dual-TOS files and put them online, if you can find them all you have to do is program your EPROMs with the ready-made code.

If you press the buffer tab in your program you will see the addresses.

main page

Image

Before i load TOS 2.06

Image

Loaded TOS 2.06 (HI)

Image

Now what? this is where i'm lost, if i just load TOS 1.62 (HI) after TOS 2.06 i'm guessing that's not correct

I need to assign the images to the relevant addresses, i get that

That is where i'm stuck! i just can't see how to do it and the user manual (advanced version!! :contract: ) doesn't see to mention this anywhere!

Under 'Edit' or 'Action' do you have a 'Move' or 'Copy' facility?

Nope, no menu from edit when you click on it

Here is "Action" list

OK, I've just had a look through the manual (online) myself. The software seems remarkably feature-poor and I can't see a 'copy' feature there. It's not clear from the manual, but it looks like the editor only allows you to change code a byte at a time, not to move it around. I could be wrong though, so load up one of your blocks of code and then go into 'edit' to see if it offers any facility in addition to simply editing the code. Maybe there will be more tools available when you are in the editor.

Also when you load a code block into the Willem software does it not offer the facility to choose an offset? If so, load the TOS 1.62 code block with no offset and load the TOS 2.06 code with an offset of 20000.

If you have no such facility and You don't want to use command line tools, OK, but you may have to consider using another Windows program such as the (free) Hex editor 'HxD' to create your Dual-TOS code files ready to be loaded into your Willem software.

Edit: Cross posting with you. OK, that 'Action' menu item 'Move A to B address' - what comes up if you go into that?
