Can anyone tell me if this is a real ST model? I have never seen one with this keyboard.

It's a normal ST keyboard with aftermarket keycaps.

Why the crappy key caps? you can get stickers for any keyboard if you want another layout.

They were quite popular at the time (I had them on an Atari as well). See this article: http://www.stcarchiv.de/stc1989/03/neue-tasten

Thanks for the article. Where I live now (Hungary) most people could only afford the stickers at the time.

Why do you think it's crappy? I have one, it's a *lot* better than the standard keys for typing. In addition to the new caps (which were designed to make it easier for your fingers to locate the keys) this kit also had new "switches" and additional springs which made the keyboard a lot better. So ugly - yes. But not crappy :)

These are the RTS keycaps. Here in Germany they were quite popular. They were available in two or three different colors, the one in the link might have been the most popular (ugly) one. Alternatively RTS also sold also kits to improve the key pressing.

I was referring to the look being crappy, obviously the original looks great but the mushy feel of the original switches is not exactly satisfying to work with. I wonder if there is a replacement for just the switches, but with original keys?

There is set of rubber springs which has the same feel like Atari TT keyboard. It is possible to buy it from Best electronics.
