Atari ST FM in translucent case - 3D model

Post by Robson »

I've never found a good 3D Model of an Atari ST so I'm in the process of making my own.

This is purely for visualization, this model is not good for molding and 3D printing.
Here is the teaser.

- Modelling is pretty much done

To do:
- Mouse/joy ports, then smoothing the edges of bottom case
- Keyboard textures
- Overall lighting and composition

After this, I do a falcon as well. :)

Looks Great! :) ... I think the STFM only had red lights instead of green... green came with the STE later.

Yes, most stfm came with green, orange light while some st and stf came with red light.

Looks great, will you make the finished file available for download once you're done? I've been working on some 2D illustrator vectors of the ST/Falcon myself, almost complete too :)

This is something I thought about but not yet decided. In the past there were some unwanted usage of my work and I don't want that again. Not the members of this forum but other internet users so this is why it's ugly copyrighted at the moment.

Great work! Have you done anything fancy like 3D scanning it in or are you working by eye and measurements?

Measuring and by eye, no 3D scanning.

Here you got my hopes up a little bit but still, very awesome :D

Can you do the Falcon one in a matte black as well? :D

Once the model is done, it is easy to play with the materials.

Luckily the main parts of the st and falcon are common, differences are easy fixes on the model.

If someone were to try to recreate actual printable replacement cases I'm sure they'd love having yours to start off from at least.

(I've myself toyed with the idea - although with my 3D printer I would need to separate it into quite a few pieces .. )

very impresive!

how much did it take to make this model so far?

btw
I just notice this post: "wanted: Atari mouse round ball plate" http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=28341

if we had Atari ST 3D model ready for 3D printing than this guy could print ball plate for mouse :)

Thanks. I just steal some time from here and there so can't really judge, I'd say 2 weeks now with 1-2 hrs per day.
It could be much faster but I'm not in a hurry.

I did look at my mouses (or mice - you decide) and it seems that I have only the sliding door ones. So I have no reference at all.

everything feels right: color, shape, textures... :) GREAT!

there are some Amiga models at eab forum: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=75525&page=10

how did you make keys? did you measure keys with nonius or something similar?

I just used the different reference images in the viewports to get it right, and my eyes. I had an STFM on my desk all the way. Modelled in Cinema4D.

hey i'd love to get a copy of your 3D model, scale it down to probably 1/6th the size, and make a Raspberry Pi case with it to run an Atari ST emulator :)

what do you think?

Good idea however I explained in the post that this model is not for molding or printing.
