Re: NEW IDE Controller & TOS 2.06 board (with extras)

Post by Jungsi »

Today I received the IDE controller with the serial number 4 :-)
The installation of the board on the CPU of my 1040STE worked. I have now tested it with a Compact Flash Card adapter.
The installation of the card with 8.46 HDDriver worked.
Unfortunately, it does not boot directly from the CompactFlash card, but only from a floppy disk.
I tried it with two different CF cards. :(

Great to hear you have it.

There's nothing stopping it booting from the Compact Flash Card if it works from floppy. Are you using TOS 2.06 ?

Did you "Install HDDriver" to the C: partition on your CF card ?

Yes - my STE have TOS 2.06. I installed HDDriver in C. After booting the flash light of the CF-Adapter is flashing then stops flashing and is looking for a disk in drive A.

That sounds like it didn't find a boot drive.

When you boot from floppy what devices does it find ?

Is the CF card plugged into the primary or secondary slot ?

Also, what IDE devices do you have enabled in HDDRIVER 8.46 ?

Oh, one other thing to check is if that the C: partition is formatted for TOS, and not Windows in HDDRIVER.

And what size is your C: partition ?

Just noticed this thread too....

http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=24931

Might be worth trying an older version of HDDRIVER and also CECILE, AHDI, or CBHD to see if the primary port can work and auto-boot. Obviously the second port won't work without 8.46, but it's worth a try.

Thanks for your suggestions! :D I think it was my fault. Today I've gone a second time through the complete soldering and I think the problem was
the interrupt line cable. Because ACSI DMA port pin 10 isn't marked on my board I've connected it to the wrong pin.....
I thought it's ok if the led on the cf adapter board is always on - now I know it's a bad sign
Now its working great with my 8GB Compact Flash Card!
Do you think it's working with the ultra satan connected to the ACSI-port the same time?

Great. Glad you got it sorted out. I know HDDRIVER 8.46 works great here.

As for the UltraSatan, yes, it should work with the IDE controller just fine.

Just out of curiosity, what soldering ? The STE adapter is solderless.

The Interrupt clip should just hook around the DMA port on pin 10.

Mine arrived today. Looks like a very nicely made board. I will install this weekend and report back.

Stupid question: can the board handle the IDE to CF adapters which are sold for the Amiga 1200? Would I require additional power or does the board provide it?

Thanks,

The connectors are 44pin, so the board provides the power. I've used IDE->CF 44pin adapters just fine.

Hmm, are these units the STe version or are both versions of the board available
now? Also, do you have an ordering page up? I must have missed some things.

Thanks!

These are just the STE/MegaSTE boards that people PM'd me on for pre-ordering. Basically 6 have gone out the door, and another 4 about to. That gives it some field work in the interim of getting STFM/MegaST boards made up.

I'll post here when those boards are ready.

Ordering page will be up soon too.....

Got mine today, testing it right now and it seems to work as it should. It's in a virgin 4160 and the biggest problem was to find all the screws in the shielding. These machines are built like tanks...

So far I've tried mine with a few 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives. I can flick a switch to swap primary/secondary which gives some useful functionality.

I didn't have much luck with my IDE-SD adaptor though. The card is correctly identified by hddriver, I can partition it but the partitions are not read correctly at re-boot. Formatting works ok. I've tried a few cards and I know this adaptor worked perfectly in a Falcon. I'll give it another go tomorrow.

Next step is the see how it behaves with the ultrsatan and the ACSI-scsi adaptor I got from Inventronik.de last week.

A great little board!

I've got an IDE-SD card adapter here. It has a FC1306T chip on it, and it works great.

What chip does yours have ?

Same chip on mine. I'll have another go at it today.

Just tried again - thought it might have been the flat cable so swapped it over. Still behaving the same. Maybe the adaptor is borked, I'll not know for sure until I get my Falcon back from Rodolphe or perhaps I can send it to someone else to test.

I will test it with a SD card too on weekend. I think it has the same chip (but this card didn't work on my Falcon...).
I can test it only with TOS 1.62 and HDDriver and Ppera Driver until I can upgrade to 2.06.
I will post here the results.

The card I'm currently using in my adapter is just a plain 1GB SD card, not SDHC. I'll try mine with a 4GB SDHC card later today too.

Just tried a 4GB SDHC and it works fine here.

I have noticed though that these IDE->SD card adapters have a ROM onboard. I suspect if there are problems, maybe the ROM is different ???

I have read on some Amiga forums that alexh mentioned some firmware on these devices only support 8GB ?? Not sure though. So I do expect ROM differences.

This is a picture of mine.

SD adapter with the FC1306T chips seems to have mixed results.
