1.44mb floppy / Hard Drive CD Burners with the Atari 1040STe

Post by DoctorVell »

Hi there,

I just have some general questions. I don't right now have the system with me (wish I did, it is at my parents house), but I am wondering has anyone had any success with the following for an Atari 1040STe (NTSC)

1) Putting in a 1.44mb floppy drive and having it format and work fine?

REASON: I can't find 720K disks anymore

2) Having IDE interface with IDE Hard drives working with it.

REASON: I have a few older hard drives I would like to use (probably have to do massave partitioning though) that aren't being used and I don't want to just use floppies.

3) Having a CD Burner and being able to burn CDs on it

REASON: Backup purposes.

Thanks

if you search the forum you will find all the answers you want, cuz that stuff was discused many times on this forum.

answer to question number 1: if you use windows do this:

to get the files on to the st you can tape one hole on the normal hd floppy(not the one with the lock), put it in your pc got to the command promt(ms dos), and enter Format a:/t:80/n:9 and then just copy the files(not the image) on to the disk, and it will work on the st.

I'll try to answer your questions in order.

#1, see Exxos' post above

#2, you can use an IDE interface with the STE, but they are rare and expensive to find, or hard to build if you want to self-make one. Your best bet is an ICD or Supra adapter and most any SCSI-1 drive. While they are still relatively rare and can be somewhat expensive, they are still more available than IDE controllers for the STE.

#3, Yes. You can use a CD-Burner with the aforementioned ICD adapter and with special software (but I can't remember the name of the software). The only thing is, the CD-Burner must also use the SCSI interface as opposed to ATA/IDE.

I would sugest this. If you are staring out> Search on here Satan Disk, its much better than a hard drive. I will get one after they are out for a bit. If you want to pm me I will give you my number, and tell you all you need to know. I have learned so much in the last year about hard drives on the st, and I have a working cd burner and dvd drive on my st.

1: Only if you are electronician. + need to replace drive to HD one (price is low now)

2: Almost same as 1 - I have project, and there are some others on the WEB

3: There is some SW for CD burning with Atari ST, but I don't think that it is free.
Finding SCSI burner is not easy this days, but who knows...
