New project: ATX motherboard for the Atari ST

Post by Cyprian »

x_angel from ww.atari.org.pl forum has started an interesting project - ATX motherboard for the Atari ST.
There are following features:
- ATX motherboard,
- ISA slot for graphics card (STGA),
- IDE slot,
- TOS 2.x support,
- Pinheader for VGA,
- Eiffel interface.

More you can find there: http://www.atari.org.pl/forum/viewtopic.php?id=17585

Wow, I did not expect this. I've been following the ST remake by exxos, but the ATX form factor is interesting! Seems like there's some great progress as well! Board seems to be nicely laid out too.

I also did not expect that. He just posted that picture with ready to test motherboard.

Wow, amazing. Although the difference between using MiST and board like this is very, very thin. :)

Interesting stuff.

Now I want to see one that will fit into a STacy case. :)

There are some discussion about extending this board by the Cartridge slot, the BLiTTER slot, and ISA modification - changing STGA (1x ISA for video card) to PANTHER (2x ISA video/lan compatible)

Come on, let’s support this guy! My Patreon app says I’m the only one, and that just can’t be right. This will be a lovely machine, true to the real thing, but with some really nice additions.
Ain't no space like PeP-space.

Nice update! I am think this project has great potential.

I went ahead and supported his Patreon. Encourage those who are able to throw a few bucks his way to go for it. This isn't vaporware, he already has an ATX form factor ST up and running!

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing he gave me this link for schematics and some photos.

Its a 4Mb ST model. I had asked about whether FDD would be full 1.44Mb (No!). DIP 68k means maybe PiStorm might be addable later ;-)

He said:
This is ST with 4MB RAM and Eiffel build-in (PIC16F876 is on its way to me). 1.44Mb FDD is not supported but You can connect two stations or one station and Gotek. Also You have CF-IDE built-in so high density floppy is no more needed. Motorola 68k is in DIP of course.

Very nice! Just curious why everyone targets the ST instead of the STe? I understand why not the Falcon, as it's... some orders of magnitude more complex, as is, I assume, the TT. But this is definitely a cool project!

I can't speak for everyone -- not even for this particular project, because I'm not involved. However...
1. STEs are more rare/valuable than STs; therefore, people might be hesitant to destroy a (perfectly good) STE to serve as parts donor,
2. using the STE would require skills to desolder and solder a 0.65 mm pitch QFP IC, skills that not everyone has.

Asked the same at Exxos and got the same responses

https://www.exxoshost.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 860#p58860

I would add complexity as STE hardware is more complex IMHO.

TT though, I don't think is as complex. Of course rarity is a thing to consider.

Quite to the contrary: Architecture-wise the TT is quite a complex machine; surely an order of magnitude above the STE, and imho also more complex than the Falcon (which puts most of its complexity into Combel and Videl).

It is? Quite surprising. Is it because it integrates parts of STE in? I would have thought that 68030 motherboards engineering had had some leaps since the first 68030 computers and some of that wisdom is included to produce a more streamlined product.

It is. As co-designer of several TT hardware addons I should know. But we're getting very off-topic in this thread.

Ah, thanks for the info. I mean there haven't been a whole lot of support for the STe anyhow, but would be nice for this to have that capability anyhow. I also thought this was a standalone FPGA type thing and not somethat required sacrificing an ST (maybe I can put my dead one to good use!)

This is definitely a sweet idea!
