Mint NFS memory leak when copying

Post by JeanMars »

Hi,

it seems there is some memory leakage when using NFS connection for accessing files:
root@mint:/h/tmp>free
172957696 bytes (168904K) free.
root@mint:/h/tmp>cp /nfs/photo/tmp/test.tif .
root@mint:/h/tmp>free
169017344 bytes (165056K) free.
root@mint:/h/tmp>cp /nfs/photo/tmp/test.tif .
root@mint:/h/tmp>free
165117952 bytes (161248K) free.
root@mint:/h/tmp>free
165117952 bytes (161248K) free.
root@mint:/h/tmp>

(there is a delay of approx. 1min between last 2 free commands).
Same behavior when copying files from the desktop.
Also same when loading a file from a NFS drive with any viewer.

Any idea?
Thanks,
Jean

Mint will use free memory as a file cache as far as I remember.

Hi sqward,

yes I thought so too but copying same over and over again eats free memory. Also, this cache shall have some limit, and should be returned to system at some time because at some point applications will lack memory, which is exactly what happens.

Thanks,
Jean

Unless you are doing something stupid (like having linked /h/tmp to /ram?) this should not happen (and it does not, at least on my FireBee):

Code: Select all

-bash-4.3# free
	  total: used: free:
Mem: 530857984 12312576 518545408
-bash-4.3# cp /nfs/mfro/Bilder/IMG_2667.jpg .
-bash-4.3# free
	  total: used: free:
Mem: 530857984 12615680 518242304
If it nevertheless happens to you, there is a bug report open at github for this issue (https://github.com/freemint/freemint/issues/172).

If the problem still persists, please report your specific configuration there, maybe there is something with your network card driver.

(and no, FreeMiNT does not have dynamic filesysystem caches, only static).

No, caches are staticly declared in MINT.CNF.
