.App extension < How to use?
Hi Atari ST,
I would like to give the Atari application Akaisex a try:
http://martin78.com/files/akai_s1000/akaisex-v1.26.zip
I have installed Steem (Atari Emulator) with TOS 2.06.
But the file above is in a format extension called .app.
What Atari program can I use to open such .app extensions?

Re: .App extension < How to use?
Isn't .APP just a regular GEM Application? Same as .PRG, but for TOS 2.x?
UPDATE:
...yes - it is an alias of PRG, here's the proof from a "stock" newdesk.inf:
#G 03 FF 000 *.APP@ @ @
#G 03 FF 000 *.PRG@ @ @

*.APP is a regular GEM application as *.PRG, and it works since TOS 1.x

Re: .App extension < How to use?
I read somewhere, and some applications use this behavior : .APP extension is used to suggest that it can be renamed as .ACC and run as accessory.
.PRG are supposed never run as accessories.

Re: .App extension < How to use?
i wonder whether netsurf will run as ACC (it's also called ns020.app)

Re: .App extension < How to use?
It was also the preferred extension for multitos aware aplications.ThorstenOtto wrote:i wonder whether netsurf will run as ACC (it's also called ns020.app)

Hi Atari community,
thank your for replies/inputs above.
Summarizing from replies above, explained in a very simple way.
How do I open .app extensions?
On another forum, someone mentioned following (Im not home currently and can therefore not test yet)
https://sites.google.com/site/stessenti ... ls/akaisex
I was not able to find any modern tools, which could same as this one (sadly)

When it is working, then it should look like this:“APP means desktop application. These are small programs that exist in RAM on the ST (a basic kind of multitasking).
Put the APP file in a folder called AUTO on your ST boot drive (in the Emulator). When you boot up the ST, point the mouse at the left-most menu on the desktop. You access the desktop accessories there.“

Re: .App extension < How to use?
That's of course complete nonsense. What he was talking about is *.ACC, and they do not belong to the AUTO folder, but to the root directory. These are small programs that exist in RAM on the ST (a basic kind of multitasking).

Re: .App extension < How to use?
See the attached picture...I allowed Steem access to that folder and this is what I see..AnthonyJ wrote:Just double click on it.teevee wrote: How do I open .app extensions?![]()

Re: .App extension < How to use?
I you pass the .APP file to STEEM as a command lin argument, probably STEEM doesn't know that those are .PRG
Rename it to .PRG in that case and it should do work.
Or simply copy the .APP to a disk image or virtual hard drive and doubleclick on it.

Re: .App extension < How to use?
there is no way this screenshot is real, how can GEM desktop allow more than 8 characters folder ??
In Steem, click on the Disk Manager Icon, then click on "GEMDOS hard drive", and for the C drive, select the folder where your APP file is.
Now reboot Steem and you should see your APP file in the C hard disk
