Thing desktop to be open source
See http://acp.atari.org/. There is now a free registration-key for Thing desktop available, and in a while the source code will also be freely available.
Btw that screenshot is from my Firebee, with Thing running under MiNT/XaAES.

Do you accidentally know, where the latest version is available to download? (for which the key is released)

Only 1.27 is available for download, but AFAIK the key is valid for that version too. I have a beta of 1.29, I will check if it's OK to distribute this version.jvas wrote:Do you accidentally know, where the latest version is available to download? (for which the key is released)

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Is v1.29 in English ?
IIRC, v1.27 English RSC was not included and it requires to download from somewhere else.... I forgot where

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
And the intention is to make it open source, which will allow others to contribute bug fixes or improvements. Wow! This could turn out to be the second longest supported application on the Ataris after HDDriver.

1.27 can be downloaded "everywhere", at all the usual ftp-sites. I've attached the free key here, just place this file in the same directory as thing.app and thingreg.ovl.majere wrote:Where can I download it?joska wrote:Only 1.27 is available for download, but AFAIK the key is valid for that version too. Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Hi, I actually have a similar question. I've read the news at the ACP website and since then I've been trying to find where to download Thing. Alas, the name "Thing" is exactly the one that Google can't help with, and searching forums with this keyword isn't much fun as well.
So, I know I'm beeing lame by asking where precisely the "everywhere" is, but after all, I am lame, so I don't actually mind
I simply have no idea what the "usual ftp-sites" are - I'm starting fresh with Falcon and the last time I seriously used Atari (8bit, anyway) was in late 90's.
Thanks a lot for any help

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Might be a good idea to add this software to the excellent Atari ST Essential software (The List). I have included v1.27E (Vectronix crack) from my Marcer Bonus CD, although someone will probably point to an uncracked FTP version elsewhere.

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Thanks a lot! Now I'm running Thing! It really might be helpful to add it to the Atari ST Essential software List. I found Teradesk there, which is also a nice desktop, more lightweight, but for now I'll try it with Thing.
Re: Thing desktop to be open source
I would say to point to uncracked versions would be better.Shredder11 wrote:Might be a good idea to add this software to the excellent Atari ST Essential software (The List). Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Yep I know, I was just trying to give quick help and it was all I could find on the spot.
Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Today, Mathias from the ACP Team emailed me this:
Our Teammember Jens for example made it public:
http://jensriemann.macdisk.de/html/guid ... ftware.htm
-We will have a download at acp.atari.org as soon as the version without
registration is ready. And later the sources will go to our CVS at
atariforge.
Re: Thing desktop to be open source
I hope it is v1.29

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Hello, were can I download the archive ticn110e.lzh (icon manager for thing) ?
Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Well it´s not funny, to find my own mails pubished somewhere. With this behavior some guys even put interviews with me at FB what is an absolute no go (the whole "sozial media") for me!rompi wrote:Today, Mathias from the ACP Team emailed me this:
Please if you get mails with individual communication (even if it is from the official acp mailadress), do not publish them. You could at least have asked if I agree.

Sorry about that, I didn't know it's so big deal. Everyone was looking for Thing, so I thought this info could help. Didn't mean any harm; I didn't see (and I still don't) any sensitive personal or confidential info in that text, I didn't take any credit for myself, I properly stated that the text comes from you and that it's from your email. Or was that info top secret, only to be given to those who humbly write and ask for it? Anyway, sorry once more. I'll never do this horrible mistake again. (maybe this way I'd like to ask a moderator to remove my previous post to protect the precious nature of information displayed there and to correct my mistake of unauthorised citation)
Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Come on,
It´s not that big deal. I just do not like to find 1 to 1 communication online. Just leave the citation where it is now, and ask in future before publishing mails. The info of course was never secret.

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Hey guys, this thread is getting on, but I was wondering if anyone did happen to find Thing 1.29 (english)?
If so, since it is now open source, a link would be very beneficial.

Re: Thing desktop to be open source
Actually has the source now been released? I think that's what everyone was waiting on but the original developers wanted to clean it up before release?
