Small screen 2560×1600 ok?

Post by MattE888 »

I was looking around for a smaller USB powered screen for my MiSTer and I ran across this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GRZZZM3/?c ... _lig_dp_it

I haven't bought it yet. Have any of you had any experience with this resolution of 2560×1600 with the MiSTer? I didn't see that resolution in the MiSTer.ini, so I thought it may be a good idea to ask everyone.

Also, if anyone has tried a good smaller screen that works good with MiSTer, let us know!

The HDMI encoder on the DE10 / MiSTer is a Analog Devices ADV7513 which is limited to 165MHz pixel rate, high enough for 1080p.

Native 2560x1600 @ 60Hz requires 268MHz pixel rate. Which is far above what the HDMI encoder, and FPGA, can reasonably achieve.

This screen can probably be used with standard 1920x1080 @60Hz, maybe even 1920x1200

It looks really nice though !

As Grabulosaure already mentioned, you won't be able to use native resolution on this screen with MiSTer. You can use quarter resolution 1280x800 om MiSTer which will perfectly scale 2x:2x without distortions.
Or if you didn't buy it yet, then it would be much better to find FullHD (1920x1080) screen which you will be able to use with native resolution.

Thanks for the info guys! I decided to take your advice and shoot for 1080p. That way I can definitely use it on multiple devices with no worries. I bought an 11.6 inch screen that is a bit more expensive.

I'm going to use this as a second screen for my laptop when i'm coding websites, and hopefully it will be good for some retro games on the MiSTer or Raspberry Pi.

Response time is 14ms on that screen, it's a bit high for gaming (can be blurry when scrolling etc.), just a heads up, albeit a bit late if you already bought it.

I have an older Dell U3011 monitor which does 2560 × 1600 (WQXGA) and it gives a 16:10 aspect ratio, with the monitor's mode set to 1:1. I set the video mode to the following in the MiSTer.ini file and it works for me, for this monitor:

video_mode=1440,80,152,232,900,1,3,28,60000

Help this helps.

for your monitor resolution 1280x800 will give better looking picture. 1440x900 is non-integer interpolated.

Hmm, it does! Thanks!

What is a descent response time? I have noticed a bit of blurriness on my TV I normally use for games. I'm kind of used to it, but look forward to a better upgrade one day when it's time to buy a new TV. I think for now, i'm not going to worry about it too much but would be cool to know what to shoot for next time!

Awesome thanks! Hopefully I find 14 to be tolerable. This new small screen is mostly for work, but I was just kind of hoping it would be ok for some retro gaming, so it would be a bonus if it did work for retro gaming.

I looked through the small screens again and the ones that are USB powered usually have slow response times, except this one. It has 6ms, but it's not 1080p. If I don't like the screen I'm getting, I may return it and get this one and use the resolution tips above to make it work.
