Oric Atmos core

Post by RobertK »

Gehstock has released a first version of an Oric Atmos core for MiST. Discussion from the MiSTer section continued here:
Gehstock wrote:You can find on my Github a Port for the MiST(without Keyboard). Can be a Starting Point for a MiSTER Port

There is no keyboard support yet, but the startup screen looks perfect. VGA and 15 KHz output both work great, OSD works in both modes.

Hi!

Cannot test it right now (I visited my mother-in-law with my family taking advantage of the long weekend 'cause Pentecost), but will try it as we get home, tomorrow afternoon or morning!

Thanks for your work!!!

HI there,

The keyboard still doesn't work, and the image on the screen is shifted upwards.

With the latest version of the core

Thank you for your effort

I'm sorry to hear that, but I undertand your frustration: without a working MiST it's near impossible to debug the cores. Unfortunately most of the MiST users (including me) don't have the necessary knowledge to help you during porting.

Discontinuing the manufacture of MiST and lack of official support shouldn't mean that it's dead! During the 5 years of production run many MiSTs were sold, and after the appearance of clones this platform lives longer.

All the retro community benefits from your valuable work, it would be nice if i.e. one of the clone manufacturers would send you a developer's equipment free of charge? I don't own any of them but after some googling they look 100% core compatible with official MiST, and I think it could be a fair business model to support the developers this way, as the manufacturer would benefit financially from new cores as well, as it would probably enhance the number of sold items.

Being aware of the MiSTer's superior potential, and knowing that one of the most talented FPGA programmer works on it there's always a temptation to leave behind the older board, especially that most authors/porters of original cores left the community or lost interesting during the past few years.

Sorry to be so long, I really appreciate your work!!!

Cheers: Gábor

I'm sad for reading that. I really appreciate your work.

Lotharek still has MiST boards available and he can repair them. And there are some clones.

On the main MiST community, on Facebook, which Gehstock left days ago, this new core has got a lot of interest (I put the news there), and people wants to help you.

And well, the oldest FPGA board I have, the 1chipMSX, released in 2006, which I bought in 2007, is still being updated, tomorrow a new update and better than ever. So well... MiST can't be killed.

Regards,

Salva

Quest made a Oric Atmos core on ZX-Uno. The core worked, but wasn't possible to load any program.

This is the presentation of the core (in spanish): http://www.zxuno.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7

And this is the source files: http://svn.zxuno.com/svn/zxuno/cores/or ... t1/source/

[User: guest / Pass: zxuno]

I mention it in case it is of interest.

Looking at the code it seems the tape input maybe connected to the UART, which is connected to the MIDI port? I made up a breadboard cable to try to bridge the mono output from my PC speaker to the MIDI connectors, but I don't seem so to get any signs of life. Am I right about the code being hooked up to this connection?

FYI there is the TI 99/4A cassette cable that is on one end a DB9 joystick type plug and the other end the typical cassette jacks. This would be ideal to load in data into the Oric (or any core) if one of the joystick ports could be configured as the input.

Thanks.
