New MIST core: Mattel Aquarius

Post by sebdel »

Hi,

Here is a new core for the MiST, the Mattel Aquarius:
https://github.com/sebdel/mist-cores/tr ... r/aquarius

Latest binary: https://github.com/sebdel/mist-cores/ra ... 112119.rbf

Image

Gamepad:
The Aquarius gamepads supported 6 buttons and 16 directions so as you can imagine, sacrifices have been done. You are left with up/down/left/right, A=K1, B=K4, Select=K3, Start=K2. K5 and K6 are not so common according to the gamepads overlays that are available here: http://www.geekvintage.com/mattel-aquarius-software.php.

Sound:
I mixed the output of the Aquarius with the AY8910 output so this core has 4 audio channels, unlike the original machine where it was a either/or situation. That does not affect any games and allow to support both audio solution easily.

Bonus:
As far as I know, the AY8910 was never fully exploited back in the days. Nowadays we know better, so... https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByKxe ... WRhbmJhX1E (thanks to Bruce Abbott at the AtariAge forum).

Update 160908:
- Add Mini Expander (3 channels sound + gamepad support)
- Fixed sound in AD&D
- Melody Chase & Snafu now runs

Update 160902:
- Limit RAM to 4Kb+16Kb to improve compatibility
-> Biorhythms, Fileform & Utopia now run

Update 160901:
- Added ROM selector
- ROM loading is a bit more stable

Know issues:
- Chess: don't accept any move
- Logo: does not always start on first try

Enjoy,
Seb

Thanks for porting the Aquarius to the MiST.

Edit: Would it be too much trouble to add 15khz support? If and when you have time.

Yea!

I am happy you made the Scanlines thing a selectable option, does this version of the core save that setting? .. (I hate "fake" scanlines so being able to permanently turn them off would be a plus for me)

Saving settings is a firmware thing. Provided you have a recent enough fw, you can press right in the OSD then "Save settings".
I'll look in 15khz support but it's complicated, I don't except a quick resolution on that.

@sebdel, no rush on the 15khz I think loading roms from sd is far more important. :)

Thanks for the new core! Only tried a couple of games. Astrosmash runs fine, but AD&D has some kind of constant weird sound at the beginning. Is that normal? (I didn't try to play it so maybe it is)

No, you're right, it's broken. Now that I took the time to do some tests, there are glitches in a number of games. And the warm reset just doesn't work. Well, there's still some work to do but I don't give up, no worry.

Wow..It's like a text-based version of Astrosmash! I still play the Intellivision version of this one fairly often.

Thanks for the great new core!

Btw if you are looking for tape handling ideas for the Aquarius I think there are some in the ZX81 core .. might give you some ideas to try with the Aquarius.. I the Spectrum Core also has tape loading.

OT updated with big update, the Mini Expander !

This is probably my last update for a while. I may add tape support in the future but I'll switch to other things for now.

How are buttons of the Aquarius core mapped to the MiST internal gamepad?

There is an internal gamepad passed to cores which map to these;
which are based on the NES / SNES layout:

1 = A
2 = B
3 = SELECT
4 = START
5 = X
6 = Y
7 = L
8 = R
(+4 more buttons not used by any core right now)

If I'm not mistaken the Aquarius uses six buttons so I'd suggest this kind of layout:
snes_adv12.jpg
Now perhaps the firmware needs some change to pass in two extra buttons to the core, though...
