state of the art atari SNDH music?

Post by leonard »

Hi!

I'm looking for what you think to be the state of the art modern SNDH files. I know all classic old madmax tunes back in the day, but I'm not aware of any recent new music. If any of you could post here his top 10. I'm looking for state of the art atari soundchip music, as if you wanted to impress some amiga people for instance.

who want to start? :)

Hi
hard to tell, there're many great pieces of music since the "Hippel era". Some of my recent favorites :
- Staring At the sea by Ultrasyd : YM sid voices + STE DMA sample. Ultrasyd's musics are worth checking out.
- Temple of Asherah by Yerzmyey ; another great musician, doing lot of retro/chip music and mixes (used in Hatari 2.2 intro ;-) )

In the end, it seems most of the recent musics are made using maxymizer or music mon, which both offer advanced sid effects and sample support.

Has been good musicians before madmax era. In my oppinion, Dma-Sc, Scavenger, Aceman, 505 mOdmate , Ultrasyd , Yerzmyey... there're a lot of good musics from them but my favourite composer is !cube. He's really dominates the YM2149F and Maxymiser very well.

Indeed !Cube is the actual master at composition, no contest imho. Some of his work is quite inspired by previous ST musicians style on some aspects, but then it's a great compendium of styles.
Then STU, 505, Ultrasyd, gwEm, Yerzmyey, Cerror, got great "dance-electro" styles with advanced compositions, and are liked by many many people, so it's definite references as well.
Scavenger had introduced advanced composition in the 90's, with some quite progressive compositions and really worked out rhythmical structure.
And then many others, Tao, Floopy, Tomchi, Crazy Q, Lotek Style, XiA, etc..................

Some favorites tracks of mine on post 80/90's period (what pops in mind as 10, not a definitive selection at all) :
- Zabutom - Space Journey : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Zabu ... nded).sndh
- !Cube - Elusive Chrome : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Cube ... roove.sndh
- STU - Bombabazooka : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Stu/ ... zooka.sndh
- Scavenger - Primus (not post 80/90's but it has to be in here ;)) : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Scav ... rimus.sndh
- Mad Max - Buzzer (one of his latest tracks, late 90/2k's) : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Mad_Max/Buzzer.sndh
- Tao - Intensity (200hz mix) (one of his latest tracks, late 90/2k's) : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Tao/ ... 200hz.sndh
- 505 - Pulse (Main) : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/505/Pulse_Main.sndh
- Floopy - Cassiopée : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Floopy/Cassiope.sndh
- Timbral - Outrun Highway E6 : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Timb ... ay_E6.sndh
- Yerzmyey - Temple of Asherah : http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Yerz ... herah.sndh

I think this one really sound like a modern and awesome C64 tune, to me in a blindtest it's like it's really not YM :)

Here are a few that I often came back to, not everyone is technically state of the art (meaning tons of timer effects).
Various styles and most of them are fairly recent (15 years old is fairly recent these days ;-)).

The most crazy songs are perhaps gwEm's remix of Stardust Memories (what an accomplishment!), Floopys Metal Planet (people tend to hate or love it) and Yerzmyeys Happy Harcore.. what a tempo that song has, but fits best to the mad demo it comes from :)

Also check out the new C64-remixes from Big Alec!

ripping protection? for a musicdisk? that's strange. So it's on purpose? too bad we can't hear these great songs on PC with SNDH

Leonard: Ultrasyd does not want all of his songs to be SNDH because he is still earning money with them.

By the way, when listening SNDH on a Windows PC, i recommend Ay_Emul over WinJAM.
The noise emulation is more faithful on this one.
Also available for Linux (untested by me).

I also recommend Ay_Emul. It allows to listen YM songs in STEREO!

Ah i don't recommend that option personally, as you then do not listen the track as the composer intended you to.
(and when an instrument is interleaved on several channels, this then jumps over the stereo)

it looks "sceneish" to you ? It just looks damn ugly to me, 90's bevel gfx style over free form window.

true,
but there are a lot of songs which sounds great in stereo.
It is cool that you have a choice to turn on or off stereo.
