software recommendation for Demo animation?

Hey peeps!
Just seeing if anyone could recommend some software for animation? Particularly to achieve fast scolling backgrounds &/or text u often see in demos.
(I'm not an Atari programmer btw, just looking for a point in the right direction for this)
I've been making Atari ST inspired animation for some live visuals I plan to become part of a chiptune/experimental/bassy performance.
I've been so fond of the Atari ST Demoscene after discovering more about it over the last year or 2 & want to do something using similar techniques I've seen.
I'm particularly interested in how I'd go about making some fast scrolling backgrounds & shapes like u get in classic demos with scrolling text.
I'd be starting from scratch & self teaching (& I'm sure there'd be much to learn), so it'd be great if anyone knows of the most basic software I could achieve this with?
Hopefully if theres a good PRG for this which could run on steem, just coz I'd have no way of ripping it from my Atari at present, but I'd be also open to running something on my Atari ST 1040, ready for when I source the best capture device.
Any ideas?
