Post by Spritexl »

Right folks,

I have acquired an Atari STE, upgraded it to 4 Megs and connected this up to my Satan drive. Which demos should I be downloading to showcase the power of the Atari STE.

Many thanks :D

Hi, can anyone tell me if it is possible to know...what are the most powerful demo for the ST and STe? I mean the one or best ones in using all the hardware capabilities at 100%.

Not exactly demo's but you should certainly check out PPera's video playback
software. It's amazing!

I wanted to try Drone but it crashes...
1. Satandisk or UltraSatan? I think you need the faster loading/access speed of the latter for it to work at all.

2. Also if using HD Driver, you may need to press 'escape' at booting up for minimum memory useage by HD Driver. I think Drone needs everything you can give it, yes even with 4 meg, from vague recollection.

3. Totally agree with you on the other two demos. :D

Ultrasatan and pressed ctrl at the begining but only starts playing the music and loops after 10 seconds. No image on screen. I have to try it on another ste or mste. Maybe is a problem with latter ste revisions or TOS 1.62...

Press 'esc' at boot up. HD Driver reserves a big chunk of memory otherwise, which you're missing, regardless of whether you press ' ctrl' for a clean desktop or not.

Oh dear, it's being difficult, isn't it.

You can contact the author directly http://www.dhs.nu/, see if Evil has any more suggestions.

But that's well know amiga is better than atari for everything (even better than the last PC/MAC), let's relaunch the debate on AF  .

2015 & again the same words : YT amiga users tried to compare a dog with a car ? I suppose  ...

By the way...I find that the soundtrack of a demo is very very important to make it charismatic, like the one on Summer Delights (STe) or World of Commodore (Amiga)

 , I was most oriented by the "Dark Side" of the ST by the past, nowadays seeing things as "demo maker"...

Good question about impressive demos, will have to see some & get a precise idea :) . [Yes, it's a hard question]...

I mean that there are of course some demos that are visually and soundly astonishing but I am not a programmer and I cannot say if one demo is more difficult than another or if it is the most software and hardware efficient. I think this efficiency is an important value of a good demo. Visually...yes, I can tell which ones I like more  (Cernit, Drone (youtube at the moment :x ) and Summer Delights until now :P )

If you are using Hddriver, enable "Fast ACSI" (Settings/SCSI Driver) and it should run.
Drone is not super-picky on drive speed and about 500k/sec should be enough (so any SCSI from back in the day should work). We made the demo as a tribute for Ultrasatan, and unless you've found one very very slow SD-card it should work. It's not super-picky on RAM either, should run with a normal Hddriver install without any special tricks.
Good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip...it improved a little but crashes again. Now it starts showing the first image but corrupted and the music sounds more seconds but finally after going the screen black again and still playing the music, the STe shows two bombs and later more and finally beeps and no music...
I don't want to distract the main subject of this topic so if I do not find out what happens I will open a new topic about it. I have tested on three STe and all crashed. On a Mega STe it seems to run but under not sync image in 16mhz but in 8 mhz...crashes too the same way. I copied the files again on a single partitioned SD card but still the same. Tomorrow I will download it again from internet and I'll see if there is something wrong when copying the files. Thx.

In the next days I will watch all DHS Ste demos. Until now I enjoyed very much Cernit, Summer Delights, Drone and More or Less Zero....but I have still some more to enjoy  .

Not from DHS I like An Cool on STe and It Make Me Shake intros. I don't know if they are difficult and hard working demos technically.
