Re: 4096 colors

so you essentially load new colors in color tables as scanline progress (e.g. you will have one new color every xx pixels)? Yes. The palettes are 'skewed' because one change occurs every xx pixels, and it's a different index changing each time. Some pixels can see into more than one palette at a ti...

Re: 4096 colors

Just to ask same question as Nativ: so there are no CPU time left if you make 3 palete switch (48 colors) per scanline? There are 48 (3 x full set of 16) colour changes per scan yes. However there are more like 50-60 colours *available* on each scanline (I didn't calculate the true number out of la...

Re: New "higheSTcolor" mode better than Photochrome & Spectr

Interesting thread. It seems in this post http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=21148&hilit=photochrome#p188331 your test is rendered with dithering, but the other formats are rendered out without dithering? Why is that? It is not too difficult to get more colours per line but the problem ...

Re: 4096 colors

wow I really like a such topics :D it's nice to be back in the Atari community :) Dal pls share source code for that converter. The source will definitely be made public. I'm holding it just long enough to make it modular, so it can be extended properly. It's not quite ready yet but in a few days o...

Re: 4096 colors

...so I have uploaded an early version of the new convertor v5 which currently implements only the 'photochrome' (STE) mode with a fixed version of the original 'hatched' dithering. It still using a very simplistic colour allocator but I have now sorted out the nasty strobing issue :-z. The dual dit...

Re: 4096 colors

Ok, doing hard-sync on Falcon would be close to hopeless I guess with all the different DMA things going on, not to mention the 31 kHz hsync (VGA) which would make the colour changes twice as long. But the real killer is the videl bug that produces noise on the screen while updating the palette. It...

Re: 4096 colors

To have perfect sync with the blitter is a no-issue. It's cycle-perfect just as the CPU. I've made many demos with blitter code for plasma and inside overscan lines. TBH my memory is beginning to come back - and it's likely I didn't try it on the ST/e machines at all. It would have been the Falcon,...

Re: 4096 colors

If you're using HB interrupts, you'll have to compensate for the 68000's E clock. Autovector interrupts require the 68000 sync with an internally generated clock that runs at an inconvenient CLK/10. Without compensation, many of your blits won't begin at the right time. I'm using HB interrupts to c...

Re: 4096 colors

I wrote a little text about how the multicolour graphics in the later DHS demos are converted and how we came out with various ways to improve quality and reduce flicker. It can be read here: http://ae.dhs.nu/multicolour/ Great stuff - I hadn't seen that until now. It contains a lot of relevant mat...

Re: Anyone know this bloke?

Found a disk labelled TPT Utils the other day. Any use or do you already have it? Thanks. Maybe it contains something I lost. :) The source I found is for v3.00 - not the last version :-/ But IIRC the main changes with V4 involved file formats, resizing and stuff, maybe some conversion issues - not...

A new version with batch- & cross-conversion is on the cards. Which is a probably bit strange after the enormous delay but there are still a few things I wanted to fix/improve out and that was one of them.

Re: Atari ST 60Hz LCD External Scandoubler

I fitted one of these (or one that looks a lot like it!) tonight inside my Mega4 ST, between the VME socket and case access slot. Works well, but it looks like the uController firmware is trying to do some sort of bilinear stretch-filter on the captured image, which means blurry text, lines etc. Not...

Re: Photochrome and Spectrum pics in ST format

@DarkLord - providing the machine has a true 8mhz/68000 'mode' and it's switchable, it could be switched just before the display starts and just after the display end, if the spare cpu cycles are needed during display. Or just switched before/after the image appears otherwise. Machines without a tru...

Re: 3d mapping

@Zamuel_a - you have to do the c2p 'as you go', which is a bit painful (addx/carry->planes, along with the dx/dy stuff), . but if the shape is not enormous there's less c2p action overall and you have a trade... I think some of the early mappers were not the full 4 planes too...

Re: Anyone know this bloke?

@MiggyMog - BSS is long gone and I don't mind making my stuff available. There are a few things that other people worked on mostly themselves (like the 030 debugger, Videlity) and I'd like to get in touch with them before making their stuff available, if they haven't done so already. There were some...

Re: 4096 colors

Yes it's true that palette strobing only generates 'in between' colours. On an ST the 8x8x8 cube can be stretched to 15x15x15, and not 16x16x16, so that's 3375. On an STE the limit becomes 31*31*31 = 29791. The colour 'resolution' achieved with PCS appears effectively the same as 32x32x32 in most ca...

@Anima - I didn't realise the linux asm56k was a different tool! I may take a look at it later to see how different it is - but your solution looks pretty good anyway. Nice find :) I'll try it out as soon as I get a chance.

Re: Cross compiling on the PC for M680x0 and DSP56001

I'm pretty sure I've seen the source package for the as56 assembler in at least one of the linux distros. I didn't pay it much attention at the time but it's worth a look now. The NeXT hardware included a 20mhz dsp56k and it probably (?) originated there. I'm less sure about the DSP debugger though ...
