Re: Memory Upgrade

I may not be the first to be confused.

You say you have an STfm, but mention having 30pin chips (Simms?) There is the confusion. A STfm doesn't have that configuration.

Perhaps you could could post a picture of the motherboard to ease the true identity of the board.

Re: What is this??

Hmmm, 4 banks of 128k.

Plus a single 64k bank of Boot ROMs for a boot loader/selector seems likely.

=576k.

Multi-cartridge board. (Not TOS, wrong range...) Rip the ROMs out of your 'single' cartridges, and plonk them on this. Select on boot. Nice.

Re: ST vs Amiga : advantages/disadvantages

This is a kind of discriminatory pricing, and for many businesses it's essential for their survival. You've seen discriminatory pricing if you've ever bought something with a coupon that you might not otherwise have purchased at the higher price. . . . By disabling part the of chip, Intel is causin...

Re: ST vs Amiga : advantages/disadvantages

I totally accept that. Somewhere my point was, if they can afford to sell a 'poverty/cutdown/disabled' versions of a design to the masses on purpose, then the R&D is wasted... Intel (as an example) is happy to sell MORE reduced spec parts at a lower cost- than offer everything the design mask can do...

Re: ST vs Amiga : advantages/disadvantages

CPU/GPU binning is a pet peev of mine. Lemme explain... I understand that testing often shows defects, and a solid design will allow disabling of sections in non critical areas. Like lose a bit of cache... gain a still usable chip. Also clock speed vs temp vs stability- will vary with the quality of...

Re: DIY: Retro fitting a PicoPSU into a STf/fm/e machine

And if you look at it, the question of how to fit a MegaBUS or VME slot to an older ST is answered.

I've said before how much I love the PicoPSU.... can't wait to tell you why.

Muhaha.. Nice job there man... Might have kept a spare molex for internal drives though.

I'd agree Mark. Adding a Mega compatible header isn't out of the impossible... But we can't get away from having to solder something. Re: TOS, Roms and ROM Fixes...any GUIDE?

About the burning ROMS subject... If anyone is only interested in improving his system with a new official TOS...he can go to the EPROM burning, isn't it? I mean, do Flash ROMS need any modification to fit and work in our systems? or can they just fit and work as well as EPROMs? Depending on the an...

I think so.... it can be slipped into ROM.. and would naturally be a later version I assume than in SuperTOS. http://myaes.lutece.net/ You may recall the thread Bid started on creating the ultimate TOS from all the fragments of patches around. Soft Patching might even fall under our first catagory. 1.1.3 Software patching for speed and improvements. NVDI is I guess the most well known, The improvements in speed are very impressive. I'm writing this reply offline- damn power keeps going out. Write a bit and save...etc Here's a guide to ROMs in the Atari the best I can explain and simplify it. I'll reiterate what you probably know- and expand on it. The old STs, STacy & Mega use TOS 1.0 to 1.4. There are plenty of threads that d...

Have you not an old video vard gpu cooler, or somthing out of an old lapptop.

I had a little fan/heatsink once, probably less than 3/8" thick, and large enough to fit 68030.

The really cheap basic video card with their neat HSF combos would be a treat no?

A stab in the dark possibility. That Diode is to a lifted Pin 40. Which is power for the DMA chip... the diode would drop 0.2v across it. It might be that 'other' signals coming in were a bit weak and the internal comparators didn't see them as logic 'high' enough causing corruption. Dirty hack to f...
