Re: How to use gzip?

How to uncompress with gzip? I keep trying "-d filename.z" but it doesn't work. That does look like the right invocation for a UNIX-like system (which I assume you're using), and I just tried out various combinations of commands in Linux to see what happens - it looks like ought to work just fine. ...

Re: Hisoft Forth

So, does anyone have a copy of Hisoft Forth that I can run in an emulator, or post a link to page where I can get it (maybe it's on a cover disk somewhere, but so far, googling has revealed nothing). I've checked through my own archives, and several online backwaters; I didn't find any disk images....

Super busy! This year I've moved projects twice at work, taken on running an extra course, taken over a failing social event and also moved in with my girlfriend! (I suspect it's that last one that's the most distracting...)

Re: Reverse engeneering Steem

In my experience, not releasing source code is because of either or both of two reasons: 1. The source code sucks (add big time if you like) and the company/developer is alergic to/afaraid of criticism/questions about the code quality. 2. The company/developer believe that they have invented the qu...

Re: Can somebody please explain this code ?!?

but i see temp% and temp%()do never have values pointed to so they will not retrieve any data 1: they're passed as pointers/descriptors, so they'll retrieve data just fine. It's just a slightly different way of doing the thing you suggest with var. 2: OP is interested in converting to C# in the end...

Thanks, but I have a manual (I have 2 actually, a PDF one and a WinGuide one) and these particular areas are just not explained clearly enough, certainly not in the PDF one ... Let me explain further what I don't understand and maybe somebody can explain ... As fas as I understand it, the Restore T...

Re: PC app for copying files to an ST floppy image

I'm not familiar with exactly how your version of Windows works, but I wonder if - in a pinch - you could write a standard blank TOS-1.00-compatible image to a disk with floimg and then write the files onto the disk direct from Windows? At best it'll leave its VFAT rubbish all over the place, but th...

Re: USB Competition Pro / Real STE

I doubt the competition pro mentioned in this thread is an analogue joystick :) I only mentioned soldering the wires on because I've already opened up mine to see how it's made - but because I was pondering doing the mod the other way, soldering from a socket to the switches so that an old-style jo...

In which case, we can probably meet up some time soon. I can probably put some suitable stuff onto some disks, and get some others formatted sensibly for file transfer, and we can probably work out an agreeable deal. Will pm to arrange.

Re: USB Competition Pro / Real STE

I would suggest, if this is the only thing you'll use this for, getting an appropriate cable and soldering the wires to the microswitches inside the joystick so that you can plug it in to the ST's joystick port without worrying about USB at all.

As I recall, it doesn't have any way to output sound to the television. There are some tricks that were used in some programs though.

Re: Bitplane based collision detection while drawing sprites

It is apparently (according to my girlfriend) far more common, even on small retro systems, to have either a separate collision map system or to do collision detection with simple circles/boxes. Reason being, using the sprite masks makes for a really tricky game. Also, a separate map means that you ...

Re: Can somebody please tell me what this command is doing ?

It's common practice in software engineering to assign symbolic names to constants. So, I imagine that somewhere in your program something defines "Set" to be 1. We do this so that it's easier to recognise the meaning of the value in terms of whatever the program's overall effect is. It makes the pr...

A couple of actual disks with this menu on, plus an image file in at least 2 collections, probably more.

Re: What is your Favorite 2 or multiplayer Game On ST/e/F030

I used to play Lethal Xcess 2-player with unseen back in the day, and I have a friend with whom I played a lot of 2-player Lemmings and some Barbarian. IK+ also got a lot of play, but a lot of the time it was beating high scores and getting to new levels. These days I play quite a bit of Bubble Bobb...

This is my all-time favourite compact menu ever due to having a significant number of easily-accessible, solid little games. I already have several copies, but if you haven't tried Pac Mania, Solomon's Key, IK+ or Metro Cross, I do recommend this one.

KnifeST can not see the bad data disks. It pops up an error and says the drive is unreadable the second the drive head starts to read the disk. I think that fat table may be gone? It can not find sectors, or tracks. I'm doing this on my Falcon. Does KnifeST work correctly on it? It sounds like it c...

I used steem yesterday on 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my Samsung Q320, no problems. Is it all running on a simple partition on the local drive, or do you have something fancier going on? What happens if you run it from something completely different (network, USB etc)?
