Need a little help with tiny capasitors

I adjacently crunched a tiny capacitor in my MSTE at C232, between the TOS chips. It is a radial unit. The schematics show it as a .1uf cap. The similar caps on the board show 104 ZAA 121 Looking at my on hand tiny caps, I have a yellow one labeled 105H that is polarized. I have another orange one t...

MSTE - T0 MFP Timer Error - Help needed please

I have a MSTE that the Atari Diagnostics Cart shows a T0 MFP Timer error, and there is a constant buzz from the monitor speaker. The FSM shows this as U306. I have swapped this chip from a working MSTE, and there was no change. This mainboard was very dusty, and is has been well dusted. Everything i...

Re: newbie questions

If you are new to ST's. First things first. Get used to a stock system before venturing out for upgrades. Learn what you like and also what you want to change/upgrade. The internal FD should be working, but more often then not they do not. There many Atari sites that stock working FD. External Ultra...

Re: Great to be back

Very Glad Atari-Forum is back!!!
All seems to be working. But is it me or does it seem slower then before? Page loads, searches seem to take a little longer?
But even so still very happy we are back!

Re: Falcon Troubles

Hello, I am back to this again. I'm not sick but dealing with all this virus stuff in a major pain. What is the 'cookbook'? The continuity of the FD ribbon cable is ok on the 'top' row. But on the bottom most connected. Is that normal? I am 99% sure the AJAX chip is good. Both chips give the same be...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Nothing like that in the cable. Just a stock soldered-in flat ribbon cable. It is not twisted or showing any obvious signs of damage. But I will do a pin by pin continuity test just to make sure.

Re: Falcon Troubles

Thanks for the help much appreciated! I do not have anything scsi. I do have a 520ST loopback cable and test card kit, without a manual (been looking for one) But I do not think it is compatible with a Falcon. Well maybe the 9-pin joystick ports. But the mouse/keyboard works I have another Ajax I go...

Re: Falcon Troubles

U47 left to right pin 7 is shorted. All others appear open. The field Service manual is fairly useless for floppy issues. It only explains what "F" error codes mean. I don't even get that far on floppy tests. I tested the FD in the good Falcon with the diagnostics cart and it passes all tests. The s...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Thanks, The dolt030 is in German, which I do not read. sorry. I used a 720K disk. But moving the drive from the working falcon to the sick one, the disk should work. So I think there is still something wrong on the sick motherboard. What should I search for to find additional help? Or start a new th...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Many thanks, This might be the fix I need. But first, it is back to floppies.ggghhhhrrrr....... I did not test the one that came with the falcon when I just got it working. Trying it now, the falcon will not read a disk from the good falcon. I pulled the FD from the good falcon and attached it to th...

SUCCESS !!! This falcon lives!!! but ...... I got my shipment from exxos. Thanks!!! Great stuff as always! I installed TOS 4.04. Soldered in a exxos approved socket. Installed a 'new' Dallas chip. Installed the co-processor. Put in the 14mb ram upgrade. connected the recapped PSU. Power on and I see...

Could you post a lick to the correct part?

How can I test to battery in the Dallas chips I currently have. Also how do I read the date codes properly. One reads 0944F 369692

Thanks everyone for the very helpful replies!

Best RTC Chip for Falcons ???

The title says just about it all. Aside from exxos RTC solutions, what is the best OEM type to use/purchase ? ? I have bought Dallas chips in the past that a web site (mouser/digi/ebay/etc) say are "NEW". After delivery, they do not retain values in memory overnight. I know there are some chips with...

I am sure the NVram battery is dead. Awaiting a exxos replacement. Is it possible to reset the NVram if the computer dose not boot?
Reset switch tested good. J20 jumper set on pins W1 position from what I see on the motherboard stencil. In fact I think I am the first one inside this falcon.

Re: Falcon Troubles

Ok Thanks everyone. While I wait, I found a really neat test item, new, for a $1 at a garage sale a few weeks ago. I'm just now looking at it. It is an in-circuit Cap tester. It is a EDS-88A. I have used it around the Falcon board, and it dose not like some of the caps. I know that this is not a Ult...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Back on topic, which pins should I check for continuity on my Jerry-rigged cable. Also what should I see on screen from the working falcon? That is without a diagnostic cart yet? I know I will not see the desktop, but key presses? off topic - The Atari community has been very kind with me these many...

Re: Falcon Troubles

I'm blackballed from Best. He will not answer my emails, or phone calls. I try a couple times a year, but no response. I ordered an 800 computer speaker to pick up at his 'office'. But I forgot about it when things got busy at work. (I worked about 5 minutes away, and for years it was very convenien...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Those settings I show above are defaults from the Atari STe Language disk. I am not sure if the cobbled together cable is "laplink' compatible. Which pins are RX and TX and I'll check with a multimeter. It takes a while for an order from Exxos to get to me here in the USA, San Fransisco bay area. Th...

Re: Falcon Troubles

Thanks,
I connected it all up, but nothing shows on the working Falcon screen. But I may not have the VT-52 software set right.
It is set at 9600, No parity, Full duplex,8 bit/char,Strip bit On,Xon/Xoff if off, rts/Cts is off.
What might I need to change?

What is 8N1? "Just run some terminal emulation software on it and set it to 9600 8N1" Which Falcon port to use? The only null-modem cable I have is a F-DB25 to F-DB9. I have no gender changer. I have a F-DB9 to M-DB25 serial I can use a gender changer. But this setup will only connect the modem port...
