Re: MISTer (Main Core)

I just wanted to say that I really love how the MiSTer and its menu system work. I've had the MiSTer for over a year, have had no issues with it whatsoever and I find it to be very user-friendly. Many projects seem to conflate user-friendliness with fancy graphics, and oftentimes they end up being s...

Re: X68000 core

Thank you Puu for this core and anyone who has helped with porting. I can't wait to try it out! With ability to swap images, 16 connections aren't required. I think up to 4 is enough. Especially when it will be available through OSD. Would the images be hotswappable (no reset)? The X68000 has quite ...

I got the impression that what you wanted to do, was already easy to do, and more elegantly than what you were asking for, so I thought that my comment could help. I will drop it.

Re: Joystick mapping revamp?

You can just enable both the analog stick and the d-pad at the same time and ignore one when the other works better for a particular game. I don't see how the analog stick being there and enabled prevents you from using the d-pad or vice versa. Just don't touch the one you don't want to use in a par...

Re: Joystick mapping revamp?

Is there any particular reason to explicitly switch between analog and digital? You can already map the emulated d-pad to both your real d-pad and the left analog stick, and use them at the same time. The Analog button on the DualAnalog/DualShock is only there for backward-compatibility since earlie...

Re: PICO-8 on MiSTer Linux

A core that is made to run love2d software (including picolove) would be very cool.

Another option for a game dev could be the original PlayStation (a core is being developed). It has everything the SNES has and more, with a saner architecture and the option to use C/C++.

Hopefully the change doesn't break anything, as it's a quiet large change to the sprite priority/transparency/alpha handling.
Thanks, I didn't expect a fix so fast. I'll be sure to test the next release.

Re: MiSTer frontend future

For compliance with the GPL, I think installing required libs from the original unaltered "debs" is a lot better than just bundling a bunch of shared libraries (with ambiguous source) together as a blob. The "debs" contain the various license agreements for each package. I believe this was discusse...

Re: MiSTer frontend future

The concept UI has spots for game release date and a screenshot or box art. This will very often look out of place, unless you maintain a database that includes every single game on a user's SD card or harddrive. And even if you do that, there is the issue of how do you detect the games? Will there ...

Re: MiSTer frontend future

Please don't turn the MiSTer into some kind of spy device. I don't want any logs of what I play or anything else. Even the "Recently played" feature makes me a bit uncomfortable and I hope that it will always be optional.

Re: GBA Core porting to Mister

I just downloaded the latest Main_MiSTer and savestates save to the SD card now. So here is a savestate from Ougon no Taiyou - Ushinawareshi Toki (Japan). I hope it will be useful for figuring out the priority issue.

Re: GBA Core porting to Mister

The issue with Ougon no Taiyou - Ushinawareshi Toki (Japan) remains in the latest version of the core. I made a savestate but I can't find it on the SD card, and after powering off the MiSTer I can't load it. There were some changes related to savestates in Main_MiSTer since the last release so I'm ...

Re: MiSTer frontend future

Collecting and organizing game images, box art, reviews and similar is a full-time job in itself, and it will never be finished. I also like MiSTer's current menu system. It's the most user-friendly GUI that I've used so far. Why not make careful improvements to what we have instead? You could perha...

I have noticed a small issue with Ougon no Taiyou - Ushinawareshi Toki (Japan). Save file: https://easyupload.io/0yo3qr Load the third save (マーズとうだい). Walk past the ice blocks to the left. You will see an issue with the priority of tiles, where the ice tiles will appear above the character instead o...

Re: 256 MB of SDRAM

Well, I know that with software emulation, the host device's storage being faster doesn't prevent noticeable seeking-related lag from happening (it tends to be very frequent), but caching the image into RAM does. But maybe FPGA cores are so effective in general that this issue goes away?

Re: 256 MB of SDRAM

To cache a disc image into RAM you need about 700 MB for a CDROM image, 1 GB for a GDROM image, 4,5 GB for a standard DVD image and 8 GB for a dual layer DVD image. This of course isn't required to get a PS1/PS2/DC core running (the image can be streamed instead), but caching an image into RAM can b...

I'm really happy with this core already. I hadn't played the Lunar games for a long time but now with saving implemented in this MegaCD core, I've dug up my old save files and am continuing where I left off.

Re: Gamma correction

Would it be possible to go the other way? I feel that Megadrive games are usually on the dark side, but I don't want the blacks to become grey. Some kind of polynominal brightening may be a good addition.

Re: GBA Core porting to Mister

Lufia was quite annoying to play before with all the tearing and sound skips. With turbo enabled it's pretty much perfect. I'm really impressed with this core and I can't see myself using anything else for playing GBA games at this point. Polynominal gamma + desaturation also makes the picture a lot...

Re: Newbie questions

When I didn't have a USB hub, I connected a keyboard first just to open the controller mapping. Then I disconnected the keyboard, connected the gamepad and mapped it. Once you can at least navigate the menu with the gamepad, you should be able to remap specific buttons in cores too.

Re: Genesis Core

The Sega CD relies on the Genesis too. The problems with the 32x are that it has a very small library, and that there aren't any cores so far that use the SuperH CPU architecture (perhaps code can be taken from the J-core project though). It's a lot of work just so that we can play Knuckles Chaotix.

Re: MegaCD (SegaCD) Core

Amazing work, the core works great! There are some emulators like Mednafen that allow per-game save files for CDROM-based games, instead of a global save file. Could this eventually be supported on the MiSTer with the MegaCD core, once saving is implemented? The internal save ram is pretty small, so...
