Re: Scanlines and Resolution

It seems you cannot get proper scanlines with the 486 core though ; due to the fact lines are doubled before the scanlines are applied. Will work with all other cores. Ahhhhh... that's why! Now it makes sense the stupid resolutions I was getting from that core... Can these settings be set per core?...

Re: Filters for Scaler

filters showing a lot of artifacts like 100% dark scalines at 1080p (4.822x scaling) I started thinking about banding type of issues like this, and how to predict what worst case visual artifacts would appear as. I determined that phase lookups will come in cycles of varying length depending on inp...

Re: Filters for Scaler

You're right about the binlinearsharp filters. The reason they are slightly wrong is because I generated them using a for loop that just spit out the coefficient rows based on how many rows to have the 128 to 0 transition should happen over ... and apparently I can't count. I'll fix it in the next d...

Re: Filters for Scaler

The stepped red line represents which phase will be chosen based on the floor of the "real" phase, which Grabulosaure confirmed the scaler is using. And the X points mark the actual center of 1/16th sub-pixels which I think we should be "sampling" from. Which are basically offset by +1/32. So I thi...

Re: Filters for Scaler

Yes, phases are just truncated. I haven't touched the scaler for a while. Many things could be added, for example : - 32 phases - Hybrid scanlines (AFAIU, using 2 polyphase filters in parallel) - Separate R/G/B polyphase coefficients - Better downscaling - matrix polyphase fliter instead of "separa...

Re: Filters for Scaler

I've just put the repo up here: https://github.com/thehans/MiSTer_Filters I spent some time trying to explain the overall ideas in the README, so I won't repeat it all here, but the two main types of filter I've been playing with so far are: "Bi-Smooth": interpolates between 2 taps (like bilinear),...

Re: Filters for Scaler

Thanks for the reply. I had seen the wiki page and the Intel + ZipCores docs, but it took a few times of reading over before it sank in. I guess I was originally getting confused about the sinc/Lanczos explanation, thinking that was something inherent to how it mixed the phases. But now as I unders...

Re: Filters for Scaler

I am trying to understand this polyphase filter concept to maybe play with my own settings. I still don't entirely get it, but it seems similar in some ways to a convolutional filter, which I'm a little more familiar with. Is it possible to convert a convolutional filter into a polyphase representa...

Re: GBA Core porting to Mister

Sorry, but where is the formula in this thread? I got this formula from Soltan in discord for the "pixel shader calculating the gba colors": out_r = 0.845*r + 0.170*g - 0.015*b out_g = 0.090*r + 0.680*g + 0.230*b out_b = 0.160*r + 0.085*g + 0.755*b He also made compare images that look very promisi...

Re: Having some trouble with filters

The udpater is supposed to pull these down automatically so I don't know what's up with that. It looks like the updater was changed to look for a "releases" folder and I named the releases folder "Releases" with a capital "R". Hopefully the updater works correctly again. Thanks to Locutus for findi...

Right. The location is hard-coded, so I don't think you have choices for location. The udpater is supposed to pull these down automatically so I don't know what's up with that.

Re: ao486

Hi ! I've a working ao486 setup. I was just wondering the following : - scanlines don't seem to be applied properly. They just made the image darker but I cannot see them. Any idea what it might be due to or how to work around it ? The same happens in other cores when I combine the internal scandou...

Re: Filters for Scaler

This is a "dumb user question". Have you guys / gals been experimenting with *combining* filters with the built-in ones. For example, I tried to combine HQ2x with some scanlines but am not super happy with the result... Or built-in scanlines with bilinear for instance. I would really like to lean t...

Re: GBA Core porting to Mister

Amazing to see the GBA core up and running on MiSTer already. It's a really exciting addition. Some people have said they managed to get it running on their CRT televisions (unofficial supported at this time) with the following settings in mister.ini: [gba] video_mode=320,8,32,24,240,4,3,16,6048 ;S...

Re: Detailed guide on ini file settings?

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll give them a try! Will 4x integer scale be in a 1080p window with black borders in those settings? I want to avoid my HDTV having to do any scaling as it's not very quick at it. Yes exactly. You'll get black borders with 4x at 1080p. Awesome, will most HDTVs be ab...

Re: Detailed guide on ini file settings?

Re: NeoGeo topic

There seems to be SFX and Voice drops in many games. In KoF2000, the cursor section noise drops 1 out of 3 times. I tried with both HDMI sound and Analog output from the IO board, same thing. I also tried with both the Stereo mix option at 50% and None, no difference. I'm using NeoGeo_20191014 BTW....

Re: Filters for Scaler

Does anybody see anything missing from the currently available filters that should be implemented? Feel free to post it here! I really like the Catmull-Rom scanlines as they add a bit of softness that looks nice on my VGA CRT. The normal vertical scanlines look a bit to sharp for my taste however. ...

Re: Gamma correction

The ADV dsp is just basic multiplication/division so it is not suitable for gamma correction. Can we re-use the scaler's 8bit palette to use as LUT? Grabolosaure told me months ago that it can be used for that. I asked him about fully gamma correct blending for the upscaling (requires gamma LUT at ...

Re: Gamma correction

Back in the day graphic designers were making content that was viewed on a CRT. A CRT has a very different gamma curve compared to an LCD display. Low and mid-tones are much darker on a CRT. So the designers compensated for this by brightening the darker parts. If the content is viewed on an LCD th...

Thanks for the help. It was a ROM problem. I guess the MiSTer or the Genesis core is more picky than it used to be. I'm sure that's a good thing! There was a region setting thing added where the core will set the region based on the header. If you have any more trouble you should try manually setti...
