Ok, all the +5's checked out fine (or as fine as _I_ can tell ;) ). The DMA lead I rechecked too, and again, no problems there that I see. It's not a very long cable either (and it all used to work). Tried enabling and disabling parity on the drive, tried TE both ways too to no avail. Tried HDDriver...

Blimey, thanks guys, lots to try there. I'll try and find HDDriver first, give that a go I think, and of course I'll report back here. Fingers crossed. :)

I'd guess an ST weighed around 4 or 5 kilograms. That's only a guess mind, I don't own any scales. :)

Well, just for fun, I tried it on my "new" STE, and it at least boots up to the desktop successfully, although it reports it can't find the AdSCSI interface. So would using older/different driver possibly help? And if so where would I get them to try, as I only seem to have a copy of the latest vers...

Thanks, but I think I'll just leave this one as 2megs. It's more than I thought it had, and should be plenty enough for any use it's likely to get.

Aaah, what a donkey I am. I bought this STE as a supposedly vanilla 520, but it's already been upgraded to 2 megs of RAM, in other words, someone has already been inside it with a soldering iron which would explain the weird soldered in SIPS! Apologies, that should really of occured to me earlier, b...

So is a SIMM and a SIPP basically the same, aside from the SIPP having pins then? In other words, if I remove these modules and solder some SIMMs in their place, woud that work? I would go for SIMM sockets if I can find any. Not too sure I want to do that though, never actually seen an STE like this...

I'm not sure what SIPPs look like, but these look an awful lot like SIMMs, and you can't pull them out. I thought SIPPs had longish legs? Writing on the back on the "modules" says LEGEND / LG 41000 / MADE IN USA. I've taken a rather crummy picture, there's poor light here and I'm a useless photograp...

STE SIMM Sockets!

My "new" 520STE doesn't have any SIMM sockets! Just 2 SIMMs soldered straight to the mobo!

I've never seen that before, does anyone know if it's easy to upgrade, i.e. desolder then replace the 2 old SIMMs, or add 2 more 256kb SIMMs for 1 meg, or should I just leave it alone as a kind of curiosity? ;)

Just picked up a 520STE with mono monitor, which I was hoping would be some use in getting my old HD working, however it's DMA chip is numbered:

I suppose/hope that chip is ok... :)

Thanks again. I'm definitely NOT using a floppy power connector with the +12v, but I can imagine that would spoil your day. ;) I actually don't remember whether the ST is plugged into the IN or OUT on the adsci, I'll have look tomorrow (busy moving house at the present, but my ST stuff is get-able)....

Well I stripped down my ST and gave all the socket chips a push, they all made creaking/moving noises, but I'm still getting the same problem. :(

Next step I guess will be swap some chips over from my dead 1040, and hope that doesn't bring more problems. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the replies. ijor, I think you might have hit the nail on the head, tomorrow I'll strip the ST down and give all the chips a push, etc, failing that, and assuming the DMA chip is socketed, I could try and swap it out for the one in my dead 1040ST, I mean it can't hurt, right? :) If all th...

Ah, no, it's still exactly the same. :?

I fear something is wrong, do you know what happens on a working AdSCSI board connected to an ST with no HD connected to it, I mean does the ST boot up ok?

ICD AdSCSI Problem?

I've got an old ICD AdSCSI controller for my ST connected to an external HD case with a HD in of course. ;) Anyway, a long time ago it used to work fine, but now it doesn't... When I boot up my ST with the drive connected, the ST very quickly goes to the desktop without even booting from floppy, and...
