Re: Hatari 1.9 and Minix: it just works

Fantastic stuff! I don't have any Atari hardware to work with anymore, but I am interested in the converted sources if they are available in .tar format, as I still have an Amiga 1200+68030 adapter, and I am working on porting 1.6.25 to this platform. A further step might be to port 2.0.2/4. Thanks!...

Re: CP/M-68K on Hatari?

CP/M is pretty much a subset of (GEM)DOS. It should be possible to create a CP/M layer for TOS. It would be an interesting exercise :) Definitely! But as I mentioned, I found it more tedious than fun :) On the good side, DR's documentation is top notch and a pleasure to read, with tons of examples ...

Re: CP/M-68K on Hatari?

Ok, I was under the impression that there already was an ST-version of cp/m 68k, but the op is actually asking for someone to port it? Sounds interesting, although I'm not sure what to use it for :) Do you have compilable sources? Maybe you should put your half-finished project on github or somethi...

Re: CP/M-68K on Hatari?

All CP/M needs is a set of machine-dependent BIOS routines that interface with the hardware. The old Atari development system's Alcyon C compiler produces object code compatible with CP/M-68k, so it's possible to do cross-development on TOS. I recall there was plenty of documentation available, and ...

Re: MINIX hard disk doesn't work on Hatari 1.8.0

Hi, I think I've got the reason why Minix (and all other programs/OSs, that use ACSI in interrupt mode) don't work on 1.8.0. Bit 5 in the GPIB, which signals an interrupt from ASCI, is never reset and no new interrupt will occur. After I inserted a call of FDC_ClearIRQ() at the beginning of functio...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

The problem (I see) in AmigaOS JSR method, is that, other then Exec, there is no guarantee that a library will be available at the same offset. Some usually are and were, but that changed later on, and some software did not work on more modern AmigaOS versions, because of that, and required patchin...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

I suppose that's the point: you can't really call the OS pre-emptive if a task has the option of altering the OS's policy. Is an automatic gearbox still automatic if you can override it? ;) There's a lot of things I like about Workbench/AmigaOS. But the hardware wasn't ready for it. I had an Amiga5...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

But a process can *prevent* task-switching from happening by calling an OS function specifically designed to do this. OK, this is not considered "proper" in today's operating systems, but todays computers are about one gazillion times faster and have 10.000 times as much RAM. You can afford spendin...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

.... IIRC AmigaOS is always in user mode, so Exec (the scheduler) doesn't really have any privilege. With no context switch, it means OS's response is quite fast, but the downside is that any application can hog the system if it doesn't voluntarily relinquish control to Exec. I don't think that it'...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

An AmigaOS process can explicitly disable pre-emption, that's true. But when multitasking is enabled, it *is* pre-emptive. MiNT and MagiC has similar mechanisms to allow programs to run in a single-tasking mode. Yeah, but a task shouldn't be allowed to disable pre-emption at will; the decision shou...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

I was talking about the AmigaOS type of multitasking which isn't really pre-emptive, In what way isn't AmigaOS really preemptive? Because strict preemption doesn't require a task's cooperation to be preempted; but this doesn't happen in AmigaOS. I think Linus Torvalds was the first to point out thi...

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

I know they aren't the same thing, I was talking about the AmigaOS type of multitasking which isn't really pre-emptive, with the additional problem of a lack of MMU which requires the applications to behave. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: What could Atari have done better with the ST?

One of the ST designers (he has a blog as DadHacker) mentioned the possibility of implementing a cheap and simple but "proper" MMU (offering very simple forms of protection and relocation). With a socketed 68000, replacing the latter with a 68010 (probably already cheap by then) we could have had a ...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

An Italian computer journal MCmicrocomputer published an article (in March 1987) in which they compared the Amiga 1000, Atari 1040 and Apple IIgs. Overall, they concluded that while the ST looked like the "less exciting" of the three machines (noting that Amiga had the better graphics and the IIgs t...

Re: Atari ST, the missunderstood computer

When I got an ST, only the Amiga 1000 was around. I (well, my family; I was a kid back then) simply could not afford it. And for a much lower price, I got a second disk drive, and the monochrome monitor. I never cared much about graphics and sound; the games I loved didn't really need all the bells ...

Re: MINIX hard disk doesn't work on Hatari 1.8.0

Nope, doesn't work for me. I downloaded a new copy of 1.8.0, I started it up, and "hooked" it to an already installed and configured MINIX hard disk, and MINIX doesn't mount the hard drive. It's working perfectly well on 1.7.0. Are you sure you have an ACSI image loaded in Hatari? I can send you the...

Re: MINIX hard disk doesn't work on Hatari 1.8.0

I think you get the same message because you left disk01 inside, so MINIX tries to mount a filesystem which doesn't really exist. When you get the "Insert ROOT" prompt, you should eject disk01 and insert disk02. Here's where 1.6.x and 1.8.0 differ: the former goes forward, the latter gets stuck. I f...

MINIX hard disk doesn't work on Hatari 1.8.0

Hi all,
I tried installing MINIX on a ACSI hard disk under Hatari 1.8.0 and MINIX freezes at boot. With version 1.7.0 and 1.6.x it works perfectly.

Cheers,
Antonio
