Re: I completed my 7-year quest to play Thieves’ Guild!

Yes, patience was definitely needed. :) I loved these sorts of BBS games as a kid in '90s, especially the strategy ones, and they were part of my daily routine.

Also, don't miss this interview with Paul Witte, who wrote Thieves' Guild, and his friend Herb Flower, who made all the art for the graphical front-end: https://breakintochat.com/blog/2020/09/15/paul-witte-and-herb-flower-creators-of-thieves-guild/ They met at a Utah Atari users group, where Witte w...

I completed my 7-year quest to play Thieves’ Guild!

https://breakintochat.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/travel-side-by-side.png Some of you have probably seen posts from me over the years trying to work out how to play Thieves' Guild using its graphical front-end client ... over telnet, inside an emulator, etc. So many failed attempts! But at ...

Re: BBS software

I ended up using BBS Express!. It had a huge manual, and seemed like it might be intimidating, but in fact I got a bare-bones BBS up and running pretty quickly. Biggest issue was learning the right commands in the scripting language to launch a door game. The first manual I read apparently was for a...

Re: PLATOTERM - solving the screen redraw problem, need input.

Virtually every Atari user uses NVDI, it has many benefits for basic OS usage. nowadays most ppl will have a cable for their LCD that works Just want to put it out there that _not_ all Atari users use these things. I don't have NVDI. And I don't have an LCD, only an original SC1224 monitor. One of ...

Instant Graphics and Sound (IGS)

Hey everyone, This year I learned about the existence of "Instant Graphics and Sound", which was a cool Atari ST-based system for displaying vector graphics, animations, and sounds over a BBS. It was very similar to the later RIPscrip that became popular on PC BBSes. I have found several versions of...

Re: Serial constantly freezes

Seems like that was a step in the right direction. After applying the patch, I was able to load TAZ100B following the steps I outlined above, without crashing. Unfortunately, when I try typing a command (such as "atdt5555555") into TAZ or ANSIterm, the terminal displays gibberish as if I'm using the...

Yes I am a big fan, I am at present resurrecting my old BBS Spy Visits Spy BBS with Forem ST 3.77 and STIK, I will have a working copy up here as soon as I unzip 7 door games that I have downloaded. My BBS will be running again. Russ Do you have any old messages on the BBS, or are you re-creating f...

I tried running --trace all on hatari today. Re: Serial constantly freezes

If your Hatari starts really slowly, it's possible that script kills the temporary "cat" processes reading of the 2 FIFO files, before Hatari instances have opened them cross-wise for reading & writing (process opening FIFO freezes until both read & write ends of a FIFO are opened). Could you try r...

Re: Serial constantly freezes

I tried hatari-local-rs232.sh. Line 20 didn't work (hatari=$(which hatari) ), but I overcame the problem by hard-coding the direct path to hatari inside the application bundle. (e.g. '/Volumes/Emulation/Emulation/Hatari/Hatari.app/Contents/MacOS/hatari' ) Unfortunately, while the script *does* spawn...

Re: Serial constantly freezes

I don't have Mac, Lantronix, USB-serial, or other serial port in my (Linux) PC. Best would be if you can provide a backtrace of where exactly Hatari is frozen. How do I provide a backtrace? Tell me what steps I should follow, and I'll happily try it. Otherwise I can try debugging the issue only if ...

FWIW, I know the Lantronix works on my Mac. I'm able to use it just fine with Dosbox using this option: serial1=directserial realport:tty.usbserial I tried using tty.usbserial instead of cu.usbserial with Hatari, but that resulted in immediate freezing when I try to check the "Enable RS232 Emulation...

Serial constantly freezes

A number of years ago, I wrote a blog post about using Hatari on my Mac to connect to BBSes over telnet via tcpser. At the end of that blog post I noted that Hatari has a tendency to freeze up if you enable serial emulation too early. In the years since then I have tried many different terminal prog...

Re: Use ST High via screencast, without mono monitor

At the time when I was using my STFM with a colour monitor, to test Hi-rez software, I used the software called Sebra https://www.atariuptodate.de/en/5600/sebra No extra hardware needed. But of course using Screencast is kind of a cool method. Wow, I hadn't heard of Sebra before. I'll have t...

Re: Use ST High via screencast, without mono monitor

Hehe, that's an interesting way to achieve mono out. You could buy a VGA adapter and connect the ST to a modern flat screen as well. It will give you mono and low/medium resolutions if the monitor can deal with those frequencies.. Fair point! But I was trying to avoid buying and keeping a second mo...

Re: Use ST High via screencast, without mono monitor

The answer to my own question is, YES, you can just run a wire connecting pins 4 (MONO DETECT) and 13 (GND) of the monitor port . After doing that, if you have CE_CAST.PRG in your Auto folder, the Atari will boot into mono and you can control it via the Cosmos Ex screencast. I wrote up a little blog...

Re: Use ST High via screencast, without mono monitor

Can I just run a little wire between the two pins on the monitor port? Or does it require more than that?
