Strange screen bug in 1920x1080 with Aranym and Mint

Postby Faucon2001 » Sat Oct 06, 2018 7:18 pm

Hi,

In 1920x1080 resolution ( Aranym 1.02 + FVDI + Mint 1.19), when I view in full screen an image with Zview or with Vision, the left border is cut by roughly 8 pixels (black bar). As full screen mode is used to set XaAES wallpaper, the wall paper is cut on the left side.

I have noticed this issue only with this resolution. In 1920x1200 full screen is ok, so it's not related to a max resolution. Lower resolutions like 1280x1024, 1280x800 and 1280x720 are ok too.
I can't test this resolution with my falcon, only with emulators, so I can't say if it's coming from Aranym, Mint or FVDI. I doubt that it's an issue with Zview and Vision as they show the same behaviour.

Can somebody with a a supervidel test zview in 1920x1080 and see if the left border is cut?

VDI is usually not very happy with resolutions not divisible by 16. 1080/16 = 67.5

I know, and I have tried 1920x1072, but it doesn't help at all.

I'd love to test it out for you on SuperVidel but guess what, exactly that resolution doesn't work in combination with my LCD. :) Maybe one day I'll get a firmware upgrade which fixes that...

And I attempted to test this on my Firebee but it looks like I have managed to misplace it's SD-card so I have currently nothing to boot :(

Re: Strange screen bug in 1920x1080 with Aranym and Mint : solved

Postby Faucon2001 » Sun Oct 07, 2018 11:16 am

Edited post :
Thanks for your help !
Well, i have found a solution. I new that VDI, as commented by Joska, works with multiple of 16, and I therefore set a VDI resolution multiple of 16 like 1920x1072, but it didn't solve the problem. The solution was to change the size of the image.
Basically, I had to crop the image from 1920x1080 to 1920x1072 for Zview to display on the full width.

In fact the resolution is rounded down automatically to 1920x1072, even if you declare 1920x1080x32 in FVDI.SYS it appears in XaAES folder as 1920x1072x32. Is it XaAES or FVDi which does that, I don't know, but it seems that real 1080p is not possible by nature.
So it doesn't seems to be a bug, but just a limitation of the system.

I heard the author of the SV drivers got thrown into a volcano and took the source code with him.

It looks like a limitation/bug in fVDI on ARAnyM. I found my Firebee's SD-card today and was able to test MiNT/XaAES. zView had no problems displaying an image in fullscreen in 1920x1080.

It might also be considered a feature. The desktop, and the vt52 console driver, will have problems if the resolution is not a multiple of 16, or more precise, a multiple of the character height, that might be the reason why fVDI is more restrictive here. Rather unlucky, because 1920x1080 is a rather common resolution nowadays. But 1080/16 gives 67 1/2 lines for the vt52 driver, which means it would have to lie about the number of available lines, displaying only half of the character in the last line, and running into problems when having to scroll the screen up.
