Bird to be alive demo

Postby LaurentS » Sun Feb 18, 2018 8:25 pm

Hi all,

After a looooooong time, here it is finally ...
... the new falcon 030 demo from Dune / Sector one / Cerebral Vortex / Arcadia Crew called "Bird to be alive"

It was first released at Sillyventure 2K17 and finished first in the falcon demo compo.

You can download it at : https://bitbucket.org/SectorOne/btba
(This repository is temporary thus you should not reference it on your website as a long term place for download.
Please duplicate the ZIP on your own website where possible).

A video is available here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgJkN5peFCI&t=3s

Code ................ : Thadoss / Dune
Code ................ : Splash / Sector one
Gfx and Design....... : Templeton / Cerebral Vortex
Design .............. : Xerus / Arcadia Crew
additional Gfx ...... : Mic / Dune (disco texture)
Music ............... : DMA-SC / Sector One

This demo should run well under hatari 2.0 or higher.
It has also been tested with success on accelerated falcon 060.

The first part (a bird is born) :
This part is running in high resolution. All the animations
are made with the 68030 when the DSP plays a MP2 soundtrack.

The second part (happy birthday, let's dance) :
Here, the demo runs in normal resolution, and the DSP is
computing all the 3D, env-mappings, movements, ...
The music is made of several loopable sequences, rescripted
as a complete track.

Greetings to all our friends in the Atari communauty
and to Grey for his wonderful SillyVenture

I know this is over a year later... but does this run well on the stock 030? I just tried it on mine and I've got a nasty feeling my Falcon isn't feeling too great :( As some graphics worked and then got covered with garbage... guessing it's either RAM or the blitter.

Yes, it works well on a stock Falcon030.

I was afraid of that :( I'm running on VGA, and this is how it looks. Wonder where I start with working out what's going on here. Are these areas using the blitter or is it just straight CPU code? I assume if the DSP is busy it's doing the polys?

Have you ruled out a corrupted copy of the demo software? I think you’d see Blitter problems on the Desktop as well.

Don't think it's the Blitter considering the background is corrupted in the first picture. Any other demos that have problems?
How do you run the demo? Beware that if you use CosmosEx on the Falcon there's quite a few bugs to look out for that will lead to data corruption when copying files or even loading files during a demo for instance.

It's been so long since I saw corrupted files on a machine that it didn't even occur to me that that might be the case. I just tried copying it over again and hit a weird issue where I couldn't create a folder on a partition all of a sudden, so I'm wondering if that FS is out of whack. Copied it (via UIP Tool) to the other partition and it runs perfectly there. Very grateful for that, a potentially corrupt partition is something I'll take any day over a hardware issue!

Good point on the desktop not being all mangled Daniel, I'd read once that TOS does use it but had forgotten that it did so. Great demo :)

Thanks a lot.
And I'm pleased that your falcon runs it finely.
