How to mount NFS shares under Mint?

Postby simonsunnyboy » Sun Jul 10, 2011 7:48 am

Hello together,

I've successfully configured my PC to export data via NFS. How can I mount that network share from Mint with small overhead? I don't want to run any large daemon on my Falcon (it has no CPU speeder), I would prefer to simply run a mount command from my startup sequence.

Which Mint packages and/or programs do I need?

cheers,
ssb

I have not used NFS mount on Mint. I use SMB.
But you may want to download ftp://nic.funet.fi/pub/atari/mint/network/nfs-050.tgz and have a look at it.
Hope it helps.

Hi,
this is easy:
Install rpm archive http://sparemint.org/sparemint/RPMS/m68 ... 8kmint.rpm.
If you have an EasyMiNT installation, this is already done. Make sure that there is nfs.xif in your
MiNT system folder (C:\mint\1-*-*\).
You can mount shared folder(s) with command:
-----
mount_nfs -v -o <option1,option2,...> <PC-IP or hostname>:/<shared folder> /nfs/<folder>
-----

Mine looks like this:
-----
mount_nfs -v -o rw,rsize=1024,wsize=1024,retrans=10 gurke:/home/schatznfs /nfs/gurke
-----

"gurke" is the hostname of my PC, so i named the /nfs/<folder> the same, too.

Using hostnames instead of IPs only works with a correct file /etc/hosts.
Now there should be a folder in U:\nfs\ which represents the shared folder on PC.
You can get detailed informations with command "man mount".

If you want an automatic nfs-mount at start, add a line in /etc/fstab:
-----
<PC-IP or hostname>:/<shared folder> /nfs/<folder> <filesystem> <packetsize> <number of retries>
-----

Mine looks like this:
-----
gurke:/home/schatznfs /nfs/gurke nfs 1024 10
-----

Good luck,
Latz

Maybe we discussed this some other time,
I am happy with sharity-light
it works basically the same as Wongck stated, but I think it has some options 'embedded', so jou just type shlight and the mountpoint.

I don't know which method is faster in trasferring files as I didn't try them all.
Fact is that (by using shlight) you don't need an NFS daemon on the PC, since shlight uses the 'native'(ha ha) smb windoze export

However, there are lots of people who run Linux as their home PC, so it's more convenient for them to use NFS.

Thanks sofar!

I guess I have to extract the mount binary from the RPM (no big deal) but where can i find nfs.xif? i have no complete RPM based unixoid setup, just the bare Freemint + XaAES setup.

I think you mean nfs.xfs which is in the xfs folder of freemint package.
Before you can mount nfs share you have to start rpc service (portmapper).
Mount point for nfs must be in the /nfs/ directory as Latz wrote.

I know that you did not install SpareMint (from some other postings), that's why I suggested you the package at the FTP site.
It contains all the software needed for NFS in one package.

From what I read, this is only needed for the server part of NFS.

Sorry, sure it's nfs.xfs (extended filesystem), NOT nfs.xif (ext. interface).
Find it in freemint package/driver/xfs/nfs.xfs.
The command is mount_nfs, NOT mount.
The portmapper is only needed if you want to run a nfs-server with MiNT. But
you should install nfs-server package anyway; it contains the command "showmount".
With "showmount -e <IP>" you can see which folders are shared. I really don't know
why this is not in the freemint-net package, it's definetly a command which is used on clients,
not on servers...

I think I have the parts together now (and got educated on .xif vs .xfs). I only want an NFS client. I will report on my progress! :)

Hum, I get "do_nfs_mount: mount request failed with 13"

That's a perfect error message. :coffe:
What does it mean?

The NFS driver is loaded, i can access U:\nfs, even if it is empty at the moment.

In the German board, Beetle had the same error message.
http://forum.atari-home.de/index.php?topic=5450.15

Translation with Google is a real pain - formatting gone, grammar errors & sometimes mis-translation.
So I cannot tell if it is exactly what you experience or what the solution was from Latz, but it seems to resolve for him.
But you surely fair better many times than me in German.

I added a line into /etc/fstab and I get 3 bombs now. /etc/ is a symbolic link to c:\cripple\etc\
I suppose it is because I have no full unixoid setup and no /bin/mount_nfs but just a c:\mint\mintnet\mountnfs.ttp :>

I need a way to mount it by calling the ttp directly :(

Mint executable are just .TTP files with the TTP extension removed.
So it should not make any differences.
I guess being a non-Sparemint installation, it may be missing some configurations files.

I may try this when i have sometime.... but problem is I do not have a Linux machine at home.

Sofar I made all Mint binaries work from FAT filesystem with this method. I mainly need them for the Mintnet support.

@Latz: agreed, i replied there already

Ping, ftp and rdate to my Linux box do work already. The net setup itself is ok (and if I had proper routing on the Linux PC, I would have internet access on the F030 too)

So now I have a light weight Linux system called TinyCore on my system.
I have a NFS share exported, and can access the share via my Win NFS client.
On my Falcon, I get a RPC timeout error.

I have no NFS rpm installed.
I can ping the server.

Ok, did you set some options in Linux/etc/exports?
Try

Code: Select all

/<shared folder> <Falcon IP>(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000)

anonuid and anongid should be set to user- and group-ID you are logged in on Linux.
With this, every NFS client access permissions are "mapped" to user 1000 in group 1000.
