ATARI in 'Blade Runner'

Postby Grunaki » Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:09 pm

I watched the classic 'Blade Runner - Director's Cut' last night, and in the background in the scene where Deckard kills Zhora, there's a huge neon ATARI sign with the Fuji logo. :D

Where have you been for the last 25 years, you never heard of the Blade Runner Curse?

The Atari Logo is in almost every scene in Blade Runner, as is PanAm.

Did you watch the "directors cut" 1992, or "Final Cut" 2007?

Doh! It's not the Blade Runner curse, it's the Atari curse. Everything remotely associated with Atari fails. I think it's a telepathically issued curse but I have no way of proving it.

I've started a similar thread on the ABBUC forums a while ago.
Currently it mentions (apart from the ones mentioned on here already):

D.A.R.Y.L - Atari 800XL, CX-40 joystick and pole position

Terminator - we all know the Terminator is 6502 based. According to some guy on the ABBUC forum inspecting the shown assembler code the Terminator might be XL based, rather than Mac-II (contrary to wikipedia)

ET - Features an Atari 2600

Police Story - Features an Atari 800XL running Syncalc in the office of the big boss

Series:
- Futurama's Anthology of interest II Episode - While not restricted to Atari it features various popular 2600 characters and a "milatari HQ"
- The IT Crowd (some british series) features an Atari 2600 along with some other old comps/consoles
- Some German music show from the 80's produced in the Tarm Center in Bochum featured a Mega ST right next to some audio equipment

Other:
Lazard - Living on video - unconfirmed as youtube isn't loading for me
Wintergreen - When I wake up - A classic featuring the infamous story of Atari dumping ET cartridges in a landfill

Can I haz hardware?

Not a movie but in Paris La Défence Concert by Jean Michel Jarre in 1990 there are quite a few Mega ST's on stage.

No, it was the '92 Director's Cut.

What's the difference between that one and the Final Cut?

Do you know if they're making another 'Blade Runner' movie? I wish they would, rather than keep frigging around with the original.

Sometimes these things make a lot of difference - other times you don't even notice.

The Director's Cut of 'Blade Runner' was a lot better than the theatrical cut.

The 'Aliens - Special Edition' was pretty good too - while it was only a few minor cuts, it fleshed the story out a lot better - same with the 'T-1000' cut of 'T2-Judgement Day'.

And 'Dances With Wolves' had about an hour of footage cropped, which made the story a whole lot better when it was added back in (and incredibly long - the theatrical cut was 3 hours).

I really wish they'd leave the 'Star Wars' movies alone now though - it's like Lucas has to go back and mess with them and re-release them every couple of years.

The point about Terminator is that they use an Atari Portfolio to hack the ATM for money.
Mac Sys Data/Persistence Of Vision

Instructions said to install Windows 2000 or better so I installed Fedora.

Too bad, the picture quality is rubbish.

Grunaki wrote:What's the difference between that one and the Final Cut?

  • 100% better print, scanned at 8000 lines per frame from the original negatives. I almost wet my pants on the first scene when we watched the HD-DVD version on a 50" Plasma.
  • Reworked special effects, all the black lines round the optical composites are gone.
  • Extra footage and alterations enhance this compelling vision, including an extra shot of a crowded city street, a brief sequence of two exotic dancers wearing hockey masks, and a shot of Deckard meeting a policeman before he enters the Snake Pit, the unicorn scene has been extended.
  • There's also new footage of Zhora crashing through a display case after being pursued by Deckard. This scene was reshot. The original actress, Joanna Cassidy, performed the stunt herself, replacing original footage of an obvious stunt double.
  • Roy Batty’s death scene, where a dove is released into a bright blue sky, supposedly at night, now shows the dove flying into a night sky, with an appropriate bleak backdrop.
  • In the scene where Batty confronts Tyrell, the line, "I want more life, fucker" has been replaced with "I want more life, father”.
  • Deckard’s conversation with a snake merchant has been rerecorded and reworked. In the 1992 Director’s Cut the dialogue is completely out of sync, making it very distracting.

Probably loads more.

Do you know if they're making another 'Blade Runner' movie? I wish they would, rather than keep frigging around with the original.

Never, and quite rightly so.

I got a gift certificate for Christmas, so I picked up the 'Final Cut' edition of 'Blade Runner'.

It's pretty good, but there's only really a few seconds of extra footage different from the Director's Cut. It just tidies up a few loose ends, really.

I only got the DVD version however - I'm sure it would be worth it with the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray version.

Mine too

Mr. Oldfield used Atari 1040 in his early works. You can see it is listed here as Atari 1040ST with C-Lab Notator and Steinberg 'Topaz' direct-to-disk software. Later he changed to ProTools and Emagic Logic Audio on Mac G4.

If I remember well, some early album was credited as been recorded just with Atari 1040, Akai S1100, Korg M1 and Roland D50. That shows that to create something really good you don't need ccomplicate technology, but inspiration :D

Well it's not "new" that the Atari sign is visible several times in Blade Runner... but it makes it an even cooler movie :)

I still reckon the 'War games' Atari holographic game in one of those Bond movies is the best 'video game' related scene i've seen!
