WOS Demo Section

The spectrum had some pretty decent demos - and the same sound chip as the ST!

Yeah, i think Amstrad CPC used a compatible soundchip too...

Well, the 128K and later models have, a basic Spectrum doesn't have a sound chip but only a 1 bit beeper.

The CPC one is compatible though and IIRC some CPC songs are available as SNDH as well.

Yeah, it was introduced with the 128.. Although they did manage to get some surprisingly good effects out of the beeper too..

Some of the demo makers even managed to combine the YM chip and the beeper to add extra 'channels' to their sound.

It kind of doesn't count though. I'm pretty sure it won't run on a real spectrum, only their special emulation.

The Spectrum 128k and +2/+3 had the AY-3-8910 Chip, produces by General Instruments, as well as the Amstrad CPC and MSX. The Atari ST has a YM2149 made by Yamaha. They are similar, but not the same. As Wikipedia says: "The YM2149 chip has the same pinout as the AY-3-8910, with the minor difference that pin 26 could halve the master clock if pulled low. If left unconnected, as it would be if replacing an AY-3-8910 chip, the master clock is not halved."

You can actually convert ZX Spectrum sound files to SNDH to playback on an Atari ST, but due to the differences with soundchip frequences the files will sound different unless you transpose the ZX Spectrum files down by 3 notes before conversion. I've done this in the past when converting Spectrum soundtracker modules to SNDH.

Some games used this. Chase HQ springs to mind. It used the AY chips 3 channels to produce the tune, and the beeper for digidrums.

Speaking of the beeper, check out the tunes done by Tim Follin back in the day. Amazing to hear what you can do with a single channel beeper. Agent X is a fave.

Seems like "soundchip" is a wide conception http://z80.i-demo.pl/

YM is a licence from General Instruments' AY. Personally I prefer YM's sound as it's more soft.
But most people can't notice it.

As for demos, if anybody's interested, I made kind of "ultimate collectrion" for 2009 year.
It's below.

I selected them (newschool progs) for 48K / 128K / Pentagon. But the truth is that all of them will go on 128K. However demo-scene standard is Pentagon 128K (minor differences, no slow-ram etc) so simply run them on the Pentagon to avoid problems with changing machines.
Some strictly "Pentagon demos" can slow down on 128K, also timing is different, so multicolour effects could be ugly - badly set-up.
Therefore - even if only one effect was slowing-down on 128K, I moved such a demo into "Pentagon section".

Of course I could make some mistakes, so moreover watch the stuff on Pentagon. And remember that there is no possibility to perfectly emulate interlace. :-\

To run the progs correctly, without error, You must clear/free entire RAM so -

start TAP files like:
choose: 128 BASIC [ENTER]
type: usr0 [ENTER]
type: LOAD "" [ENTER]
(LOAD command is under "j" key)

TRD/SCL files start in this way:
choose: 128 BASIC [ENTER]
type: usr0 [ENTER]
type: RANDOMIZE USR 15616 (RANDOMIZE is under "t" key", USR = CTRL+SHIFT and then "L")
RUN "name" (of the file with extention *.B RUN is "R" key")
if there is a BOOT.B file - then alone RUN command is enough.

Don't start the files in other way 'cause demos will not work.

Yes and also Agent X II which was even better! I bought these for both my Spectrum and Amstrad computers because the game was released around the time I switched from one computer to the other.

Another amazing feat of sound programming was the game Chronos, complete with synth bass line, chords, lead solos, drums etc.......fabulous! :cheers:
