Postby Crash » Fri May 27, 2005 12:52 am

Greetings,

Anyone lose the hard disk in favor of an IDE compact flash drive and disk?

I am hoping that no drivers would be necessary in order to use an IDE CF reader and CF card. If so, I plan to put together a Falcon with no hard disk.

The hard disk that I used in my Falcon for many years was a 500mb, and since you can get 512mb or 1gb CF cards affordably, I was thinking this would be a nice alternative to a hard disk that is getting pretty old.

Do you mean to say that you have a USB adapter that plugs into an IDE port? What I have seen is a CF adapter that plugs into the IDE port:

Exactly what I will build today!
Take care, the Falcon harddisc is IDE44/notebook cabling by default so you will either need an IDE44-IDE40 adaptor or (as I did) a CF adaptor that has a plug for IDE44.
I'll report on this modding tonight!

But many sceners reported it works great - Alive #9 should contain an article by gwem about this issue.

Good luck mate!

The interesting question is whether you can multi-partition a single smart card in the higher mb category, using HD-Driver or other HD utils. gWem's Alive 9 article referred to a single partition 64mb card used as a boot drive.

I hope that if it isn't possible now, a fix will come soon ;-)[/list]

do you have to partition a hard drive for use in an atari or can you actually only have one partition?

You have to partition every drive. Even if you only have a single partition, the drive has been partitioned ;)

And so yes, you have to partition and format the cf in the Falcon in any case!

A friend has an IDE CF reader in his Falcon and it works pretty well with the last version of HDDriver. If you want to read DOS-formated CFs, you can use BigDos, Mint or Magic.

Hmm... I would appreciate any pointers regarding a CF on the Falcon. I have tried on my system, but with HDDriver 7.61, the system hangs after identifying the devices and partitions :/

Thanks!

Greetings,

Success! I just wanted to let everyone know that I was successful in installing and booting my Falcon from a Compact Flash (CF) card. I tried both 512mb and 1gb cards.

I was originally not successful since I was using HDDriver 7.61 (for compatibility with the CT60) This locks up when attempting to boot or ID the CF card. I ended up using ICD Pro Utilities 6.5.5 (I think) and it works fine.

The hard disk driver seems to be the key, since the CF adapter seems to be wired straight through with no circuitry at all. Perhaps it uses the same pin configuration as IDE?

In any case, I'll have to see if there is an update to HDDriver that is compatible with both CF and the CT60.

Cheers!

Could you send me those ICD Pro Utilities? I'd like to give my CF another try with those.

Greetings,

I just upgraded my HDDriver to the latest version 8.16

Uwe Seimet accepts Paypal ;)

I can confirm that HDDriver 8.16 works properly with Compact Flash disks. I tried the CF drive as a secondary IDE device as well as booting from it as the primary device. Also, I have no problems with my CT60 accelerator.

Cheers!
