[Atari 800 core] Mark Watson's new site

Postby desUBIKado » Thu Sep 06, 2018 4:03 pm

Mark Watson has changed his site from http://www.scrameta.net to http://www.64kib.com. The structure of the new site seems equal to the old site.

I found these pages with references to the old site:

  • https://github.com/mist-devel/mist-binaries/tree/master/cores/atari800 (on the other hand, missing the PAL-RGB core version, but here are all of them: http://www.64kib.com/autobuild/20160305/mist/ )
  • https://github.com/mist-devel/mist-board/wiki/CoreDocAtari800 (LINKS are broken)

Perhaps someone with privileges could change these pages.

Great to see this core hasn't been lost. I've updated the links.

It would be great, if this core would use the MiST OSD instead of its own OSD, the compability is already great and as far as I see, the core is quite accurate, but navigating in the OSD is so slow and reading of a directory to mount a disk image takes a long time, it looks like the OSD is running on the native Atari hardware.

I believe Mark Watson is busy at this time. Some time ago I had written to him that there was a game that did not turn on his core: Grid Runner vic20 port.

Would some volunteers add support for the YPbPr Cable to the Atari 800/5200 core ?

There're some things on our whishlist:
- MiST's OSD instead of it's own
- (done) saveable settings
- (done) ATX support
- ypbpr and scart support
- SIO bus via MiST's serial lines
- stereo pokey
- [please complete]

One of my dreams is to take this as a reason to start programming VHDL :coffe: What I'm/we waiting for? Yes, same as Mark: daily business, familiy and many other things and reasons

The upstream core progressed a lot, and the ZPUflex based firmware is out of date now. Without that, no disk emulation. Without disk emulation, an Atari800 core is not very useful. So first either the firmware must be updated (it's written in C, no VHDL needed), or an Atari 1050 disk drive with ATR support must be written in HDL.
If you want a core with standard OSD and YPbPr which can only used for typing in BASIC programs, I already have one :)

I also settle for the only YPbPr implementation, because this core works very well.
It just support RGB 15Khz.

Yeah, updated one of my sd cards this morning with this version. Great optical improvement (assuming that this means MiSTified). But no changelog nor history in core's readme... But anyhow, many thanks to Slingshot!

Ok, here's a changelog:
- Updated to Mark Watson's latest source
- Use MiST's standard data io for cart download, no ZPU Flex firmware used anymore
- 15kHz/30kHz with or without YPbPr output

Second button is not emulated, but Atari 5200 games, like Moon Patrol, use two different buttons.

May you fix core Slingshot ? Thanks for this great MiSTer port

It has nothing to do with MiSTer.

Btw, Moon Patrol works for me, one button is fire, other is jump. Just the border is slipped a bit down, not sure if it's not a problem with the original core.

There is a second button map bug in this core, because the second button of first joypad is mapped to the second joypad.
The buttons of second joypad work correctly if I select "no" to joy swap option in the menu.

Please may you check Slingshot ?

Tip: You can use Atarimax 8Mbit Flash Cartridge Images with the Atari 800 core!
Just download an image from https://www.atarimax.com/flashcart/forum/viewforum.php?f=4, convert it to Atarimax 1MB Flash Cartridge if neccessary (i.e. by using emulator Atari800's cartridge management menu ("Create Cartridge from ROM image")) and you're set!
Have fun with nice menus, fast loading times and well choosen games! 8)
On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy.

Many thanks Slingshot, great work. I would love to see the Atari 800 core getting a Mistifying or is it a Mistification? :)

Could you give a few more steps please.
The Flash images seem to come in .atr .bin & .mcw
Loading the Atari800 emulator and selecting "Create Cartridge from ROM image" just gave an error - ROM image must be full kilobytes long

Thanks

Sure. As you might know, ATR files are pure disk images. MCW files are project files used by Maxflash Studio.
The big ATR's you'll find at the link I posted above are to upload and flash the Atarimax 8MBit Cartridges with a real Atari machine.
To convert the found ATR's/MCW's to ROM/CAR usable by our belvoed atari800 core, you have to use the Atarimax Maxflash Studio https://www.atarimax.com/flashcart/documentation/downloads/Maxflash_Studio_Installer.exe, documentation at https://www.atarimax.com/flashcart/documentation/chapter1.html.

Some of the archives contains a BIN or ROM file (1048576 bytes). These are convertable to CAR by atari800 as mentioned above (1048592 bytes then, contains the needed cartridge identifier header). These CAR files are usable by the atari800 core.

And for the lazy guys I've converted all of them already which can be downloaded at http://www.share-online.biz/dl/BI15W5NPC28

This is however an Atari 5200 console core, not Atari 800 which is a computer.

I confirm:

- port 1 = Joypad only 1 Button works
- port 2 = joypad 2 Buttons work

I would like to see it, too :) But it's a bit more complicated if you need disk support.

Anyone knows a comprehensive CAR/ROM collection of Atari 800 carts?
I'm progressing with the 800 core, but there are about 50 types of carts, would be good to test most of them, be it with header (CAR) or headerless (ROM).
Not interested in XEX and ATR for now.
Upd.: I'm not blind, and saw the big collection (thanks for it), but it has only type 2A carts.
.
.
.
or better if you can test it yourselves. CAR/ROM support only (ROM is headerless, so the type is guessed from the size).
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I'm sure you've already found my post at http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=34283&p=368070#p367592 which contains a link to a bunch of mega cartridges.
The other collection of my CAR files can be found at http://www.share-online.biz/dl/PJ7SX68POUT8
