I tested all of the cores from Somuchguru. The only build that performed notably faster is minimig-mist-1_0-newcpu which gave me those 12.5 MIPS, but it has corrupted graphics and is known for compatibility issues. The others are roughly the same at just over 7 MIPS.
In the end, compatibility is of course more important than raw performance (it's easy to have great performance when the accuracy isn't as great so comparisons with 1.0 aren't 100% fair), and in most cases it's still more than fast enough. Of course if more performance can be extracted without impacting compatibility/accuracy, that's always nice too.
