ATARI ST Monospace fonts

Postby patrick295767 » Wed Jul 25, 2012 4:44 am

Hi,

For coding and developing under vim and other apps, I was considering that the fonts of the Atari are really nice and comfortable to read. :coffe:

Would you know a font that would closely clone this font type or the atari Tos desktop fonts (all resolutions). Monospace is imperatively recommended/needed for various reasons.

Kind regards

Will this do? (second one down)

I'm not really sure how well these old bitmap fonts translate to modern resolutions/font renderers. Would be interesting to see...

Thank you so much !!
http://www.modelb.bbcmicro.com/atari-st ... system.fon

I use it under XP. It is so so great (under gvim)

Would you eventually know how to make it work under linux. I copied it into .fonts.

The terminal would be great too by the way if it could be possible. "Terminal:h12:cOEM" , "system2:h12:cANSI"

I am not so sure that the font : http://www.modelb.bbcmicro.com/atari-st ... system.fon
is very the same as the default one:

I could find those ones on a fan's website: http://coding.binon.net/files/atarifnt.zip

They look much closer. Would you know how to convert those to fon for windows and for a compatible font linux format?

Thanks

I have a prototype 6x6 ttf that I made, and a copy of somebody else's 8x(probably 16) font from the forum, but they're all hidden away on another computer. I'll see if I get a chance later to post them on my website.

I read that there was some converter to convert a TTF to FON..

Here is where Kroah posted the 8x8 font: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18423#p158778. I made a quick and dirty 6x6 font of my own, attached to this post. If there's interest in taking it further, I might try to make the 8x16 and to do any further unicode remapping needed. I might even resurrect my wiki login and try to get the wiki more representative in this area...

Could we work together to make those fonts of default atari?

http://www.atarimania.com/st/screens/gfa_basic_3_4.gif

to start with one has to make the GIF or PNG of each chars, and then combining / merging in a table is very easy

That's the 8x16 one I was talking about. I'll make a start tomorrow, shouldn't take long.

Here's a first draft of the Atari 8x16 system font as a ttf. The encoding on this one should match the Kroah font, except I think I messed up one of the dots so I might need to revise it a little, I added some iso8859-1 characters (taking some liberties...), and I didn't include the 0x00-0x1F range yet. I'm thinking of replicating the 0x00-0x1F characters elsewhere - iconv will keep them in the same place, but it would be nice to be able to output them with an ordinary program.

thank you ... I have to check. I am using Linux, so fon is rather not so common. I will try to convert ttf to fon, i can catch time.

This font here is cool : You see that there was different sizes on the atari, that means that one could also have ttf and fon of different sizes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb1AD6VLN1U

the fon is for dev under windows
the ttf is for ./fonts under linux
under mac, no idea

the fonts that you have made a sincere revolution. Lot of sizes, it is too a ttf... ;)
Nice rendering of the chars and it is really System.
I was wondering the meaning of Medium in the design of the font (likely default?)

It would be worth to make a monospace fon of it ... wow, what a genius work you made.

There are more fonts of atari to be engineered, like the ones for the different resolutions (low, medium, high)?

Do you remember STOS? what was the font employed? (relatively big and very clear to read as well)

Best Wishes

A huge thank you for that font, daeghnao! It looks gorgeous on my linux box. Vim is even more pleasurable now - like writing on a souped up Atari ST!

I'm going to post a contrary view here - I think the ST monochrome font looks less than optimal.

So I'd like to ask whether there is a way to get the machine to use a different system font (really, in TOS) and if so, how? My favourite font is an Xwindows font called Terminus:

Image

It's an open source font that looks particularly clean on a black background.

I used to have NVDI 2.5 set up to load the 'monaco Mac system font, so if you find terminus in a compatible format....

Yes, there is a Mac version of Terminus (I think) - I use it on my Macs, although it might be a Windows font file, not sure. I'll see if I can find it.

Is there a guide to using NVDI to do this? What format should the font file be in?

[Edit] Got it. It is a file in my font directory called TerminusMedium.dfont.

I don't recall exactly .FNT ? :)

I think there was a standalone util to change the system font.

or maybe with GDOS?

Currently I am using FON monospace fonts: set guifont=System2:h12:cANSI. It is an alternative. However I miss special chars (ü,...)

Would it be possible for you to save-as this marvelous Atari 8x16 system font as FON format (monospace)? thank you

Hello,

If you try to get the logo into the Atari font above, then, it misses few chars at the beginning

One can do:
fc-list
and do:
xfd -fa atari_st

you will see that AtariST8x16systemfont.ttf is unfortunately incomplete.

However, the file AtariST8x16systemfont.ttf is much superior to atari_st in terms of pixels, rendering, and quality.
