ST-BOOK ROM dump?

Postby Stratagem » Wed Apr 06, 2011 6:26 pm

Hi folks,

does someone own a ST-Book and / or has a TOS dump from a ST-Book? I'm looking for a copy of TOS 2.08 which was only installed in ST-Book's. Maybe someone can help?

Cheers

I doubt there were any fixes, probably just hardware specific changes, like don't try and boot from floppy, as there isn't one.

ST-BOOK ROM dump?

Postby Mal7921 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:48 am

There was also the 'P:' drive which had the serial transfer software in rom, but to be honest that was it.

May well work in an STe or mega STe though as the ST book was based on the newer hardware.

8O That is pretty cool. Because alot of people are getting floppy problems, and now they can use the serial link to transfer their files.
Look at some of Bid's posting, he is using serial link and having some challenges doing it (sorted out now).

looking at the schematic its a 4Mb plcc ic same as the falcon
so i feel as there are embeded tools
youll need to use the same tool as a falcon uses to dump the tos to image
and need to watch the byte order is right for flashing
so forinstance the falcon image needs byte swaped before flashing
when its exported from the falcon to disk

i think using a plcc tool and remove the chip to read it is best
an old gubbed book

someone can take a rom from 'temp' send it too me and ill mail it back after a couple of days
and ill extract it
not even best sell this part
so it is really needed

With any luck somebody from here buys the STBook on eBay right now. Then there will be a good chance of saving TOS 2.08... it's in Northampton, UK
Mega"SST" 12, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

Well now I'm back on a computer and not the iPhone I can do proper and fuller replies.

I'm happy to send my poorly ST Book to someone who can dump the ROM (Simbo, could you do that?), the ROM is fine it's just that the machine bombs when trying to access the hard drive. I suspect either a problem with the drive or a problem with the connector. I've not had chance to do anything with it and it was not packed very well when it was shipped to me from Germany, which I suspect may not have helped(!).

Like I said though, I'm happy to ship it (And pack it better than the last guy did).

I'm not 100% sure who's book it is, but it's not mine as I've had a few issues to deal with before getting it sent up (Plus mine is German). Still the important thing is that one has arrived and a ROM dump can be done.

However if it is NOT an ST book, let me know as apart from one layer of packing, mine is ready for shipping now and can be sent up Tuesday/Wednesday (Now I have the money to sent it)

WERE is DA book ?

please send it
ill fix it and also dump the rom image

if you dump via software perhaps it needs byte swapped before a reflash as is the falcon

??

why did this thread die when the rom dump is needed for many.,.?

ST-BOOK ROM dump?

Postby Mal7921 » Wed May 18, 2011 7:08 pm

Hi simbo sorry it's taken so long. In short I've just lost my job as becky is starting hers so money is damned tight right now. The machine is sat packaged up on our table and as I get my last wage in the bank soon, I'll send the machine up straight away, it'll then Be a couple of weeks before my redundancy package comes through.

Ah well, stuff happens I guess

nice one mal it arrived in a box in a box
and i must quote you ' in the explitive box' the ebay guy sent it in? originaly
3 boxes ..always nice...
one rom dump attached below
its in german tos2.08 stbook
this ties up the last loose end in atari forum
ill test the hdd from this book
on the falcon secondary

i am in the middle of fixing the display pictures attached
to clear off horizonal streeks

ill add a cf ide0 and a cable from the battery port
can just be tucked back in its for a sdcard on ide1

iv'e told mal to donate the total cost to the board funds
ill add the bits needed to make it work well
and change the internal lithium 3v cell

also the display modules driver
the electrolytics have leaked and there is some corrosion
on the connections of some ic's and passive components
ill resolder
ill replace all 4 of these 22uf smd ecaps and the 10uf and 4.7uf
depands what mal wants

if someone has a english or US rom from a book
or if you have a book
its easy to remove the rom
just three screws at the underfront lift up the keyboard carefully and unplug the two ribbons
using a small hook pull each side foward carefully then remove the ribbon very carefully

and use a plcc tool to remove it carefully and evenly both preasure and pull

then send it too me in a silver bag
ill read it off etc

if someone wants a copy of this on OTP 27C4001 {same a the rom in it }

no probs £6 + post send me email
i have 7 otp
ill double check compatable types then ill post laterZ

off to bed early now

ok the plan with the firmware as i dont think mal has the floppy addon

so what ill do is use a sdcard 44pin ide and a cfcard adapter
i have both and a 2GB cfcard spare draw a single 511MB partition to it on the ste with a asci>host>ide adapter>cfcard {working and tested here and now}

mount the cfadapter inside there is no problem doing this and the parted card
as the internal hdd is mounted with a ribbon {be carefull!!!!}
there is a need to use a female to female 44pin junction
this will allow break out of ide0 and ide1

There are 2 problems with the ST Book, 1 most (Around 60%) were manufactured with a German ROM, the remainder were French and English )With possibly other languages but those are the only ones I know of for sure), and 2 no external floppy was ever made (Though a case for one was shown). If someone out there has an English TOS ROM, it would be worth adding to the collection of available ROMS.

its worth adding in the right hands and using a resorce editor
come on someone get out your programming fingers and change the menus to u/s/english/fr/ as a patch
or do it on the fly quite easy these days and to any language there is a need when byte patching
to preserve the crc tick box is ticked at all times
use a good decompiler in windows 98 osr2 to do it ida pro springs to mind
it will be happy with the roms
i see tools made to alter roms for other machines that can be employed with a nice note to there owner
well at least we have one image so far
i dont mind german its easier for me to understand than some english threads...#'s
mounting the rom image in a sim would be a bit of fun for now

lets see it boot ????!!!

its also worth adding
that if you have a book from other than german language
then you can use the rom dump tool used for the falcon
its in the guides tools section here

so just run it from floppy or sdcard and it will dump a prob byte swapped copy of the image

this can be checked using the first 8 bytes of any image
if they start the same then they are non trained
if they are byte swaped they will be trained

so the image above is 'ready to burn' and needs no more treatment's

i am glad mal you told me about the 'it warms up then works as normal'
becouse ill warp the drive in a towel then
run it up for 10 mins before trying to access it

usualy with bearings in hdd its the other way around

i think its the firmware on the drive
as when i powered it as was the hdd powers inits then shuts down

ill leave it un accessed in a towel for 1/2 hr first before i let the falcon init it

now back to the lcd
you have to be MEGA carefully with these lcd's
the lcd in the book has a plastic protection front
so before you take it off the main body
it comes off after clicking within the four holes under the bat case
no news to someone who has taken this rare machine appart before

however be mega carefull when inside the screen unit as the lcd is thin glass and easily damaged
use towels and soft stuff as props

once you have it like pic the pics

before and after

before you must remove the 6 screws that hold the lcd as a retainer plate
and heatsink for the RC driver ic;s groups {2X4 ic }

once you resolder any issues as above pics
then replace the plate
but be sure the lcd hasnt slipped from its stoppers check the corners of it for the rubber stops set to place

.....
ive found 22uf smd caps that are good and leak free type philips
more laters
