how is this demo effect called?

Postby twh » Tue Sep 26, 2006 6:15 pm

Hello *,

look at the picture. It's a moving map and the light beams are shining through the edges and "lakes" (wholes). What is the name of this effect? Anybody know a web site where this effect is technically described, potentially with source code?

this picture is from an atari 8bit demo. It's showing pretty much the same beam light effect. Here however the light source is not behind a wall but inside a sphere.

how is this technique realized?

Hi, hey that's kind of old question ;) I'll try to answer as I'm not really a specialist.
It's called "GLOW", to me a "new school" effect. It can be done with several methods, one example:
copy the whole screen then past it with a % of transparency and of course it must be stretched (with a gradient too)

edit, note that in fact it's not always the whole screen (works if the object is centered) because it's getting to be called "radial blur" too ;P
