Floppy image selection runnable from harddisk?

Postby simonsunnyboy » Sun Feb 04, 2018 11:30 am

I plan to upgrade my Falcon with a HxC compatible solution and it would be nice to be able to change the floppy image selection without having to reboot the machine all the time into the AUTOBOOT.HFE.

Is there a HxC compatible software for the Falcon to select floppy images on the SDcard from harddisk?

You can fill all available "slots" using the autoboot software with several disk images. When using Atari, just select your desired image with "previous" or "next" buttons from the HxC hardware. You can also browse the directory with the SD LCD display version of HxC, but it's not very practical if the filenames are long.

Why do you have to reboot to get into the selector, anyway? Can't you simply run HXCFEMNG.PRG? I'd have to check but iirc (for my Gotek with HxC firmware at least) the program also runs from HD. (Of course the floppy images themselves have to be on the USB stick / SD card.)

That would be the way to go. I haven't checked yet if there are files on the AUTOBOOT.hfe. I assumed it was a trackloaded thing because of the loading bar....

I am looking for an hd loadedable program with exit to desktop.

I don't want to preload the slots. I want to change them on-the-fly without rebooting.

That's exactly what HXCFEMNG.PRG is. If you cannot extract it from AUTOBOOT.HFE, you can always compile it yourself:
https://github.com/jfdelnero/HXCFE_file ... r/atari_st

At the least the version of HXCFEMNG.PRG that I compiled (see http://www.chzsoft.de/site/hardware/usb ... -atari-st/, German) has an exit option to the Desktop.

If you want to select the files on the fly, don't use the selector software and use an HxC with an LCD screen.
Set it in "normal mode" then you can select directly the HFE files from the device itself.

But that is is hardware access solution, hence the initial question. I want to operate the HxC without having to press the buttons in some use cases

So the answer seems to be: No, there is no image selector available that is compatible with a harddisk.

Sometimes I feel I'm talking to myself here.

EDIT: As soon as YouTube finishes processing, you can see a video of HXCFEMNG.PRG running from hard disk and exiting to the Desktop. This is on the MegaSTE, though. I don't know if they are compatibility issues with the Falcon.

No, I am confused when the original author of the Hxc software tells me it won't work.

Additionally I couldn't locate a ready downloadable HXCFEMNG.PRG anywhere. just the HFE files or sources (which I cannot compile due to lack of VBCC installation)

The Atari version is compiled with gcc; you only need vasm. Vasm binaries for Windows and Linux are included in the Git repository: https://github.com/jfdelnero/HXCFE_file ... r/atari_st

I can also send you my version as seen in the video; however it pretty old. I didn't bother to update it.

That wasn't obvious :(

I miss a readme how to compile here...anyway I got somewhere after locating the binary references in the makefiles.

I now have HXCFEMNG.PRG compiled from the latest GitHub sources and a loader/OUT.ST file, i think that is the AUTOBOOT.hfe equivalent?

Probably. Since I cannot boot from drive B: (my Gotek/HxC is B: on my Atari), I didn't particularly care about the latter one.

EDIT: You mean like

Yes, why is this not on Github? Or is the Github source even outdated?
