CT63/CTPCI black screen at boot

Postby pgreffet » Sat Jul 20, 2019 10:05 am

Hi all
I have a Falcon with CT63/CTPCI/Radeon 7000/512mo SDRAM.
Everything was running smoothly but I really never achieved to have it boot from my compact flash drive. When I tried to switch from CF to classic ide drive there was a scramble image at boot of the CT63. I resented the system and it never displayed anything else than a black screen.
CT63 is still detected as I can flash it from Falc.
I have to say that Falc is booting ok when 060 mode is disabled by jumper on CT63
Help needed !
Thanks
Pierre

SO many possibilities. Weak/bad power supply. Bad memory. Wrong flash. Cold connection on some CT60 to F030 pinheader pins.

Sounds like it is toasted, i just fried both my ct60/ctpci not long ago, and was extremely bumbed. These are very delicate boards! We got to be very careful!

I had similar issues with CT63/EtherNat combo ten years ago... Rodolphe fixed CT63 by replacing one Xilinx chip on it (if I recall correctly). I think there was some problem with CT63/EtherNAT/expansion card combination, because both CT63 and EtherNat went bad, when this happened.

I sold a non working unit last year to a user in the US. Not 100% positive, think he managed a repair after a serious short.
I will have to research the buyer.

Ok, the buyer is known as "coldcreekplastics" on eBay.
Think he repaired the board.

Also, another unit I had went "black", but came back to life using a Xylinx USB programmer.

How do you contact Rodolphe directly ?

I just sent him an email back then and he agreed to fix my CT63. Not sure what his email is these days, but I guess you can also try to contact him via this forum?

It seems that the forum doesn't allow me to send PM because I am quite new here !
Could you please send me his last known email address by PM ?
Thanks

This is scary. I have a CT63/CTPCI with one slot, that have a Radeon card. I am considering adding EtherNat. Is it risky? Can just adding it cause the CT63 to go bad?

I can only speak from my experience, but somehow it was CT63+EtherNat combo that broke up both boards. Rodolphe suspected thermal issues and lack of air flow where Xilinx chip is. Maybe it's good idea to add at least passive heat sink on top of Xilinx chip.

Glad I saw this thread. I just fired up my CT63 and was looking to install the SuperVidel and Ethernat.

So has anyone installed a passive heat sink on the Xilinx chip? The SuperVidel also covers up that Xilinx chip and there doesn't seem to be any reports of it overheating it. Does Ethernat run hotter?
