Out Run - USA- version (Medway Boys crack)

Postby Stefan jL » Sun Feb 02, 2014 7:00 pm

The Medway Boys crack of Out Run USA version only seems to work with 1 mb, i don't have access to the original Out Run (USA) so i wonder if the 1mb demand is because of the crack?

There is lot of cracks where RAMdisk is used instead accessing data from floppy, and then usually need 1MB . US version would need more RAM if it would be improved in some things, but I don't know about such game. Usual difference is refresh rate, TOS version check and perhaps different name, some texts .

Outrun was a strange game. The original had 67 files but Automation one-parted it to improve loading time and compression so they could fit more games on the menu, but it was 1 meg only. The Medway Boys version is indeed 512k.

If I still wanted to run Outrun off a floppy on a half meg ST I would use a single sided disk, unpacked version.
Still got, still working: Atari 4Mb STe, 520STFM, 2.5Mb STF.
Hardware: Cumana CSA 354, Ultimate Ripper, Blitz Turbo, Synchro Express II (US and UK Versions).

Actually, it one-parted itself. I played it over and over until I had visited every branch of the map, then dumped ram from the start of the PRG to the highest byte used by the loader, RTS'd the disk load routines at the beginning, packed the result, and called it job done.

Fantastic! 8) I never thought of doing that. I would have thought that the level loader would have just allocated one buffer and load the selected level into that for half-meg simplicity. Does it malloc space for each level and if there is not enough ram overwrite a level and load it from disk?

I wonder if it could have been better if they had made it for one meg machines. It was dog-slow as I recall.

It would be an interesting project to disassemble it to see if something could be done to speed the code up a bit.

There are other games, which load all files right after start, and no later disk access, maybe only highscore save. For instance Mercenary. So, can be singleparted relative easy.

"Fantastic! 8) I never thought of doing that. I would have thought that the level loader would have just allocated one buffer and load the selected level into that for half-meg simplicity. Does it malloc space for each level and if there is not enough ram overwrite a level and load it from disk?"
That would be useful, but in many games they did not take effort about such things. They were happy that it works at all  And it is not just joke - as I see, many is written by people not much familiar with ST and/or MC68000, so there is lot of inefficient code and even some bugs in (mostly) IKBD coding.
Typical, not so well coded ST game looks like: using TOS calls a lot, so for floppy access too. Not relocatible code, but with fixed start address, what is usually too low for TOS 2.06 . Not relocatible code is good, as then you can use fixed screen location, and will not happen that code will conflict with screen, which is usually right below 512K, as goal is that it work on 512K machines. But this way is not OK for higher TOS versions, which allocate more low RAM, and especially not good for hard disk users.

It was average slow/fast, I would say. There are racing games with better and worse framerate. I'm sure, that it can be made faster, but that's really lot of work. Game self is not that much good, IMHO .

Yes, ST Outrun is shameful, considering how wonderful the original arcade game is.
I remember the GEM menus in it, GEM menus!!

I was wondering how the magazines had judged Outrun, back to the time of its release.
Actually, it seems they had been quite fond of it...

ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sincl ... 000064.jpg
ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sincl ... 700066.jpg

But maybe was there simply no other pseudo 3D racing games to compare it to at that time?
No, Buggy Boy was available, and this one offers a far better framerate than Outrun...
[edit] Or not, it seems Outrun was actually the first of its kind on Atari ST, released in 1987, not 1989.

(funny to see "predicted interest curve" graphs in ACE Magazine btw, I doubt this would be a selling argument in all those cinematic/storyboarded games that get released now)

There were Test Drive, Super Cycle and Enduro Racer at the time. Super Cycle had fast game engine even if the sprites were quite small but even Enduro Racer game engine was much better than in Out Run.

I guess it was the tight deadlines given from the men in suits. Usual US Gold approach to make a lot of money fast :(

This game would need an STe treatment like Giana Sisters :)

Ian Morrison did program many racing games for the ST and i think Cisco Heat is the most advanced racing engine he did... the problem with Cisco Heat is that it uses way too much scenery wich makes it so slow. So if reducing the scenery on the Cisco Heat engine and replace the graphics with Out Run then it probably will be a fairly fast and playable Out Run game and on STE it can use Douglas STE code making it even faster :)

I thought it was a rubbish conversion, I much preferred playing it on the MSX , the music was exactly the same too. AtariZoll, this would be a good candidate for your DMA music rout :-)

Just tried Out Run today on Mega STe with cache on and it finally is the game it should have been. Sometimes even too fast :)
