STOT season 1 - Round 12. Pairs by Paradize

Postby christos » Sun Feb 03, 2008 2:51 pm

To my surprise, just a bit after the Znax contest started, Cooper - Paradize contacted me with a special offer. A new game for STOT! So I am happy to announce that Pairs is the next game of our contest. Pairs is a very nice little puzzle game and I am sure you will all enjoy it!

Announcement and download

Many thanks to Paradize for their support.

Nice conversion and it's a fun game too - simple enough that even I can't get it wrong :)

Only downside is that the looped sample gets a bit annoying but that's what the volume control is for :)

What a cute little game - the animals went in two by two etc. :D

Tiny bug where the pesky animals sometimes decide to preselect a card for me at the start of the level.

It's got a decent balance, too, the way the other animals appear. & I love the way you can get a huge score but it will be eaten away by losing lives, that's why only the score on the board counts. It should be possible to get quite a score by not losing lives & going all the way through... would need someone with much more patience that I have, though ;)

yay cooper!

Weird, it won't let me enter my name on the 'high' score (7943) table... is there some magic trick, or does it not like Hatari?

Take care that the name must be entered when the panda is walking, just before the scoretable, and not on the highscore table...

And thanks for the warm welcome :)

Is there a bug where there is sometimes a tile selected as you start the next level? Maybe worth a look before an official release of this fun game :)

Getting the hang of it... it's a tough game, as although you get more lives as you win, if you repeatedly lose a level, your score goes lower than when you started the level. Maybe a bug?

E.g. If you enter level 5 with a score of 40000, then lose having scored another 8000 points... then you restart the level at 40000... if you lose again, your score is even lower; I didn't count, but I think maybe it subtracts your first losing score from the initial score you entered the level at? Hard to explain...

As written in the .txt file :

Moreover, when you loose a life, your score is reduced and the remaining cards are substracted to your score

So here is your explaination :D

I was getting into the 50000 score ranges .. then instead of pressing F11 in STEEM to fast-forward .. I pressed F12 and it rebooted STEEM... Aaaarrrggggghhh!

Time to start all over again :(

The game has hidden depths... you see the funny little animals, you click the mouse... but there's some serious tactics involved to get proper scores - and patience!

You've gotta find a balance between greed and carefulness.. there's a couple of heuristics which can help improve play (i.e. opportunistically match non-horizontal pairs, especially when it's a NE-SW diagonal because that'll get wiped sooner, and working from the bottom-up when possible), but it's still tough to avoid dead-ends sometimes. Fun game and very smooth... pity the repeating music loop is so short :)

Nice surprise, nice game (nice gameplay and nice chiptune) but too easy and short !

PS for Coopy in french: (il manque un main menu à ton jeu pour voir les scores, se renseigner sur les auteurs, choisir entre la chiptune et le sample en boucle, etc.)

Not that easy to get a decent score without losing a life... my gf hit 200000 last night on level 25, then lost a life and 50000 points, ending with 171k. But certainly it's easy enough to win the game, because you win lives so often - by the end of the game you usually have over 10 lives left. Maybe you shouldn't get new lives so often?

Hehe it seems to make the people talk, it's great :)

Regarding the gameplay : i thought about the fact that this game will be played for around one week for the STOT, so i didn't bothered about adding tons of levels. Take this game as a "enjoy for a while and never play it after that" :P

For the lives, the first version was giving a life at each level, and it was -really- too easy... Now it's only each 2 levels... I spent a bit of time to have a cool balance between difficulty about lives, levels, and the capability to do a big score, i hope it's challenging enough for the STOT competitors

About the sample, i know it is kinda short but i wanted the game to fit on a floppy. I have a cool idea about music in the Paradize prods, which can be applied in the already existing games, but i must code a bit on it. Prepare some ram to have cool sound please :)

Xerus : to have the chiptune, play it on STf or use a machine with ram<1 Meg :) I don't have a dedicated gfxman so i thought a menu would be an other boring stuff to paint myself... And as said above, it's only a little game for fun and for doing scores, and not a massive release, i didn't planned to spend months and months on it, other stuffs are on my harddisk waiting for more lines of code. And for further informations about authors, etc , the .txt file is here

Anyway thanks for the interest, and Paradize will return again in 2008 8)

Now, stop reading this bullshit, go and do a highscore !!!
