CPU Clock Speed?

Postby 607 » Fri Oct 13, 2017 6:52 pm

(I wasn't sure where to post this.)
I was just looking into optimising a speedrun, and I discovered that if I put the CPU Clock Speed from 8 MHz to 32 MHz, screens load faster. But I'm not sure if I should allow this. How does CPU Clock Speed work? Is 8 MHz the standard?
In DOSBox, I did up the amount of allowed fixed cycles from 3000 to 6000.
The thing is, people playing on a real Atari ST shouldn't be at a disadvantage, so if 8 MHz is standard, I should probably require it. Also, can it go higher than 32 MHz? I saw that in Steem, it can, but I feel like the game might not work anymore then. (I'm talking about Dizzy Prince of the Yolkfolk)

I think I'll require people to use 8 MHz when using an emulator, as it seems like that's the standard. :)
And if someone's using a real Atari ST, and the CPU Clock Speed happens to be at 16 MHz or higher... well, I hope it won't be too much of an issue.

Yes 8MHz is the standard for ST and STe, 16MHz for Mega STe. Are you organising a gamecompo or something?

No, I have been speedrunning Prince of the Yolkfolk from time to time, as I still really enjoy that game, but regularly beating it isn't of any challenge anymore. ;) I've set up rules and categories for the game on https://speedrun.com. So far nobody has challenged my times; someone did submit a time for the NES version of the game, but that is quite different, and was even released under a different title (but I added a separate category for it).
