Problem with GEMDOS/TOS and with ACSI/EMUTOS

Postby jotego » Wed Sep 28, 2016 2:29 pm

I am trying to copy files over the PC to my MIST machine. I thought that I would be able to have an ACSI drive as a file in the SD card, and then a folder in the PC mounted as GEMDOS with Hatari. Like this:

Atari ST (MIST) writes and reads from ACSI drive -as file
Hatari writes and reads from same ACSI drive, plus a local folder mounted as GEMDOS

However, for some reason Hatari does not recognize the local folder when I use TOS. It only shows the ACSI drive. But then, when I try EMUTOS, it recognizes the local folder but not the ACSI drive. So I cannot have both running at the same time, which is what I need to transfer files.

Hatari + TOS --> ACSI works, GEMDOS doesn't
Hatari + EMUTOS --> ACSI doesn't work, GEMDOS does

Am I missing something here?

You don't mention which Hatari, TOS and EmuTOS versions you tried, nor which Hatari options/settings you used, so I cannot test your setup myself. But in general what you tried should work both with TOS and EmuTOS.

Few notes:
* TOS requires driver to access hard disks, EmuTOS doesn't use one
* EmuTOS releases support only DOS partition tables (and single partitions without any partition table)
* You need to map GEMDOS HD to a drive that isn't taken by ACSI partitions (there are several different ways to do that, see Hatari manual)

This thread has some additional information on older MiST firmware & EmuTOS versions compatibility:

In which release that was added? v0.9.6 or earlier?

AFAIK this has always been the case.
If you know a specific case of non-working partition table, please report to the EmuTOS mailing list.

I'm pretty sure Atari partition support didn't work earlier (say 4-8 years ago), because I've done quite a bit of testing for that with Hatari (It was probably around the time when EmuTOS also corrupted disks if they were formatted with VFAT.). Last month there was EmuTOS commit for adding extended partition support, but I'm not sure whether DOS and Atari extended partitions are defined the same.

Anyway, as a summary, ACSI & GEMDOS should work fine. At least as long they don't both use same drive letter.

Hatari startup output, especially from command like this would help:

Code: Select all

hatari --trace scsi_cmd --gemdos-drive skip --acsi ACSI.img  gemdos-dir

(just replace ACSI.img and gemdos-dir with your own image file and directory.)

This is about PC MBR extended partitions, i.e. the trick which allows more than 4 partitions on a PC disk.
