DVD Cover for GamebaseST

Postby Goldrunner » Thu Jan 26, 2006 7:37 pm

Since the next release of GamebaseST will be avialable on DVD I thought a DVD sleeve and label would be nice touch. However, being absolutely rubbish at this type of thing I thought it might make a good project for a fellow forum user with some time to kill!

As an example there is a sleeve and label attached from Gamebase64. Obviously this was done by a proffesional and I'm not expecting this kind of quality for GamebaseST, they are here purely as an example and to give a few ideas of how it might be done.

This is open anyone, the best entry will be the one that best fits the spirit of both the Atari ST and GamebaseST, are you up to the challenge :?:

Certainly a challenge! I can't match the quality, but I may mock up some preliminary ideas at the weekend. I've done artwork and visual design for a prototype collectable card game, so I can use some of what I've learned there.

Anyone fancy doing some well-lit photos? I would, but I haven't replaced my camera since it got nicked last year. Something similar to the C64 one for the front, fairly close angle, and maybe some original disks, boxes, joysticks, mouse for the back. I'll use some placeholder material at the weekend if need be.

Take a visit to Ebay. There are always fantastic photos of many Atari ST computers, gameboxes, disks, joysticks etc. taken by people trying to advertise their listing.

Okay, I admit it - I frequently 'borrow' Ebay photos for little projects.

Excellent suggestion, ebay may prove very useful.

The C64 cover has some screenshots of games on it. I'd like to include some in what I produce, but I just can't decide which ones. So, very brief suggestions of the most memorable games? I had a quick look to see if this had been discussed before, but didn't see anything (I probably wasn't looking hard enough though).

Starglider / Carrier Command / Midwinter 1 or 2 (a decent 3D game)
Having sold 99.9% of my 1300+ collection of originals, I'm taking a bit of a back seat on the forum. I'll still do the front-of-house admin tasks as and when they're required but, for now, I'm enjoying my Xbox 360 time too much :)

I would really love to see a great 16 color image designed by one of the great st artists. I' d prefer that from a picture since it would be closer to the st spirit!

One image that I personally would put on any design is the picture of the Egyptian king Tutankhamun that was found on ST monitor boxes. When I think of the ST I always thinks of this image as it represented the giant leap forward in graphics (at the time) from 8-bit.

I think this image was also used in the advertising campaign for some ST paint package although I couldn't say which.

Noone seems to have mentioned THE game for the ST, Dungeon Master??

Here's my general suggestions which I think give a broad feel for the ST and bring back a lot of memories for people.

Dungeon Master, Populous, Ultima V, F1 Grand Prix, Xenon 2, Knight Orc, any Sierra adventure, Lemmings, Sim City.

And nope, haven't checked if they are all in the Gamebase.

Yep, Turrican II would be good since Unseen is doing a re-engineering of the game and he is also a GamebaseST team member, on top of all that it's a classic game :!: Dungeon Master is probably a good idea also but have never got into it myself :!:

Been working on the front cover today, it's been quite fun. Attached should be a small jpeg of the results so far. Plan is for the back to have the other half of the fuji, screenshots of GamebaseST and some of the games, general blurb. The actual file is a meg and a half of PDF, so I haven't included it here.

The whole thing will get put together on a simple template to glue into a cardboard pocket, but the design is pretty flexible so it could be adapted for other case sizes.

I've made up numbers for the front for now, and grabbed a picture from the home computer museum - really need one taken specifically for this, I think, to get good angle and lighting.

So, comments so far? Anyone with access to the database fancy writing some proper blurb for the front?

Wow, that is a great start daeghnao :D I really like the way you have done the Atari logo to wrap around the sleeve and also the blue you are using for the main colour!

Here are some stats for the front:

2500 Database Entries
4000 Disk Images
400 Games with linked original disk image
800 Games with linked music file
10,000 Screenshots

700 Adverts
500 Reviews
1,500 Boxscans
800 Manuals
300 Diskscans
200 Solutions

Of course you don't have to use them all just whatever looks the best!

You will also find more information on GamebaseST at http://www.gamebaseST.com Please ignore the stats there they are old ones that I need to update. Will done some captures of the the front-end in action so you have something to add on the back sleeve.

BTW, the stats from Gamebase64 project may look a lot more impressive. But bare in mind they have been working on it for seven years compared to the two years for this project, they are also preserving just the disk images. This project is preserving not only disk images but also the retail boxes and everything they contain so there is a big difference between the two!

Nice start on the cover daeghnao.

Is there an "official" Gamebase ST logo like there is for the 64 one to put on the front?

Got myself a 2nd scanner (one at home, one in the office!) so I can start scanning some more boxes at home :)

I plan to do a bit of vector PDF of the letters 'ST' so that they're the same shape as the ones on a real ST, and then use that instead of the letters 'ST' on the cover. That'll do for the text parts, hadn't thought of trying to be any more artistic with logos than that.
