GamebaseST version 2.4 now available on Usenet...

Postby RetroGamerUK » Fri Feb 23, 2007 4:07 pm

Like I said, GamebaseST v 2.4 is now on Usenet, I have uploaded it to the newsgroup: alt.binaries.emulators.misc

It seems that binsearch.info is a bit behind at the moment, so if you search that newsgroup using other means (I used the browser built into Newbin Pro) you will find the 3.4 gig collection!!

Enjoy!

Thanks for that, got it queued in nbpro now. Wish you hadn't made one large rar and then split it though, makes things a tad more awkward and cumbersome then just making a split rar archive from the start.

Hope that doesn't make me sound ungrateful though, the post is excellent timed as this is my last week of unlimited downloads on my ISP (Zen).

Cheers

Most ISPs have rubbish binary usenet support, best option is to pay a few bucks for a premium newsfeed. Some news server companies sell access on a non-rolling basis. Astraweb for instance sell 25 gigs for $9.99 a month which works out quite well....I bought 25 gigs over 2 years ago and I still have 5+ gigs left in my account (I have a good newserver from my ISP and I also have an easynews account for most of my fills)

Glad it is appreciated, after all it took 30 hours to upload at my net service upstream (more like uptrickle) speed of 40kbytes/sec 8O

Don't worry Pugsy, the only reason I did a single RAR then let quickPAR split it was because this version of GBST is in fact just a directory called "Gamebase" with sub directories containing all the files etc, so I had to do it that way to preserve the directory structure.
PLUS, as I understand it, quickPAR needed to split the files specifically to meet with the optimal number of blocks and PAR2 files or something, I tried selecting just the directory but it was asking for files to add, not directories...
Anyway, I archived it using the zero compression option of WinRAR (the "store" option) so it should unRAR very quickly

Do you still have an FTP?? maybe someone with both Usenet access and a better upload speed than mine would upload it to you?

Update
Regarding Pugsy's comments:
Hmmmm I have just tried opening the collection (still here on my PC) out of curiosity and as you say it takes a while to re-join the files with quickPAR indeed...
Well its a learning curve for me, at least I got the collection name right this time, next time i will do as you suggested

Yep, still running except some small downtimes. An upload would be great :D .
Pugsy, if it's not free, i don't use it  . Internet is expensive enough.

only news ?

Postby megar » Mon Feb 26, 2007 1:07 pm

Why there is no emule link ? I have no access to news.

Actually I am the one who offered to host gbst 1.2b on a server (see the official gbst page). It seems this is the only place to download the huge file on the web.

Maybe I can offer the same hosting, i am worried that there was no update since 1.2b. (the 1.2b version still get downloaded every day !)
If someone can send me the 2.4 version, I can help to spread it on the web.

I'd appreciate it if someone could burn this onto DVD and post it to me... I'll pay £5 through paypal for it - that should cover UK postage and media.

Sorry to be a let down there but I feel dodgy taking money for sending out copies of GBST or any ST stuff really, and I don't want to end up doing it full time...

That fiver would be better spent investing in a month's subscription to Usenet, the hosting company I am currently with (newshosting.com) offers 1 month unlimited access for $14.95/month which is presently about £7.50 so for that you would get GBST v2.4 and a month of leeching as much other stuff as your netspeed would allow....
And there are "free" news server clients out there
Ask Muguk, they had to invent another unit of measurement for the amount of data he has leeched so far....

Of course I will be taking GBST v2.4 to the preservation party, so anyone who is there is welcome to a copy providing they have brought the means to get it i.e. blank DVDs / usb hard drives etc....

More importantly, I wonder if Goldrunner will ever return to continue work on it..... :(

Where is GoldRunner these days? Pesky 'Real Life' getting in the way, I'd imagine.

RetroGamer - I see your name thown around a lot on the English Amiga Forum, are you a Miggy fanboy as well?

I think it's a shame you get so few new releases on the Amiga nowadays. This year we had a couple of games from Paradize on the Atari, but I haven't seen a new Amiga game for years.

Anyway, off topic so I'll shut up.

Thanks for the update!

I am downloading it right now and will put the untouched rar up on emule this evening and post the ed2k link here in this thread.

With an upstream of only 30 kbyte/s it may take a while, but you will definitely get it. I will leave it powershared till the next version comes out.

Thank you.
I will upload the file so, it will be web hosted. I am very worried by the attitude of Goldrunner, release a 1.2b version (that I had very much trouble to get too !) and then, never get a new version, despite having a ftp access to a virtually unlimited web server. He even tried to reach me to replace the files by a more recent version !

I am thinking of removing the 1.2b files, and maybe replacing by the last version.

I will have to cut the file, though, because my bandwidth is not unlimited, and sharing such a big file will cost me some bucks. More to come here when I will finally get the file.

If someone have it and is ready to upload it to my ftp server, it will speed up things for everybody. Getting a 3+Gb files through only ONE emule source can take forever !!

[edit: replaced "pissed off" with "worried". English is not my primary language, so maybe these words were a little rude]

If anyone is going to share GBST 2.4 on a P2P network then it would be a good idea to first re-join the files with quickpar, unRAR the split archive then RAR it again as a single file archive, otherwise it would be a nightmare finding all of the segments on the networks, as most people will download them all then remove them from their shares as usual, so invariably the last segment would never be available...
Just the thought of torrents stresses me :x

Of course i will make a single rar file. Reasons are obvious

Just want to inform you, that it takes one day longer.
I bought my first a usenet account today and it has a 3 GB limit.
I need to wait 24 hours to upgrade to the next packet :-(

Sorry for the inconveniences.

OK. Download finished. I put the RAR file back together with Quickpar and dumped it in the amule share.
I disabled all other uploads and put it on powershare.
Tomorrow a second server will kick in and another one on the weekend when i bring the DVD to a friend.

Here comes the link:
ed2k://|file|Gamebase.ST.GBST.v2.4.rar| ... 3087BC5B|/

Please use copy&paste. That URL thingy dosn't work.
