WANTED - ACARD, YAMAHA or IODATA - IDE to SCSI converter

Postby bid » Thu Apr 07, 2011 12:06 am

Hi,

Both myself and another member are looking for a SCSI to IDE converter card.

These have been made previously by Yamaha, Acard and IO-Data.

I am willing to purchase any cards if other members have surplus. As this will be useful for a project.

Kind regards,
Bid

I can get 7720U through work for $150 USD each including postage. (Thats $100 below RRP, but no where near the $35 you used to be able to get them for)

I can get the 7726H for $45 but these need an additional adapter board to use with Atari.

Thanks Alex. I have one 7720U right now on my TT. It seems to work fine. But I seem to remember I have had to use a 50 pin to 68 pin adaptor to make it work.

So what is $150 in the queens english? About £91 ouch!! :x Just goes to show! :D

Great that you can get them through work. Do you work in IT?

I can get the 7726H for $45 but these need an additional adapter board to use with Atari.

I have not seen this model before. Its looks like its a 68pin also. I think that I am willing to try one of these in the Atari and try it out. Could you tell me what kind of adaptor is required?

I think they are about $8-$15. Just google for SCSI 68-pin to 50-pin adapters. Make sure it does LVD.

Im an ASIC engineer but our company is based in USA so I get things shipped here from there.

I think the 7722 is Atari compatible too with the same adapter (not sure what the difference is between the 7722, 7726H and 7726Q?)

ASIC engineering? I googled it, but I still have no idea what it is! lol Im a mechanical engineer, and I have been teaching electronics to colleges. Thats it. lol  But I am interested in microcontrollers, and have been enjoying learning to program and use Arduino http://www.thebigconsultant.com/education.html#Schools_and_colleges...

This 7722 looks quite good. I actually nearly bought one some months back, but plumped for the 7720U as it said IDE. The eBay advert says ATAPI and I was not sure if this was just for CD Roms?

Just noticed that the listing has ended. Is this your ebay account? Good find by the way!

So overall it is still worth it.

Ah, internal mail right?
That's how I got my Syquest 555 back in the 80s. Purchased from US and shipped via company's internal mail back to me for free

I thought you might be interested in one of these :

http://a4000t.com/store/index.php?main_ ... cts_id=180

$62 and they are known to work with all SCSI host adapters which support Parity (depends on ACSI->SCSI host adapter).

If your host adapter doesn't support multiple LUNs then only the PCMCIA slot is mounted but you can use a PCMCIA->CF/SD adapter.

I tried a PCD-47 once, the 3 slot version and I had no luck with it and the seller took it back and said it was ok. Been avoiding these multi-slot ones ever since. Has someone actually tested a PCD-50 with a TT030 for example, or does the site just assume it will work?

Alexh, this is a VERY interesting find. Qute neat too, and if it worked, means that the stupid Acard is not needed, which is surely a good thing? :D

If you read this article carefully it says this can be used on Amiga, Apple and Atari. Futher that..

All card slots can be mounted under most operating systems supporting luns and are accessible at the same time as seperate cards/drives. If your particular SCSI controller does not handle luns well, don't worry, I offer a PCMCIA to cf adapter for the PCMCIA slot, allowing the device to act as lun0 which would just be addressed as Device #2 for example.

I have nooo idea what LUNS are, but I read somewhere about PCMCIA on the Atari. Ok, actually I am lost and I have no idea what this means. One again. Then skipping some of the article and quoting the bottom paragraph

ATARI USERS: It has been reported these work on some old atari lack parity! these drives require parity! some atari users have hacked a parity generator for atari cards. Please check atari forums for this info.

I dont know off the top of my head if the TT030 has partity. I know the MSTE doesnt. Again, the ICD AdSCSI, I'd have to check. I have see a hack somewhere to add it I think, probably Vezz's hardware hack page somewhere http://atari4ever.free.fr/hardware/.

So has anyone tried this actual card. I am very tempted to order one, but I would rather pay less than £38.. It would be nice to find the source of these little bad boys. I bet there is a factory in china pumping these out for a couple of squid!!

I was testing some other solid states drives last night on a SCSI chain with several IDs already in use. I yanked ID0 put the card reader in as ID0 and it appeared to conflict with ID1. It would list the card reader 2 times and ID1 was wrongly reported as the same drive as ID0 at boot up. ID1 is also a card reader of a different brand, then I noticed I had no media in ID1. That seems to cause the strange glitch, missing media.

So my tip is this, if anything acts wonky, fill all the slots with media. At least here with the solid state drives I have, HD Driver or the drive itself seems to react strangely if there is no partition table present on the drive. I clearly remember when I tested the PCD-47 I only filled one of the 3 slots, which in retrospect probably explains why it appeared as if it was not working fully. The PCD-47 does not use LUNs, its uses 3 consecutive IDs instead.

The vendor is making no profit on these units. They are not made anymore. These are NOS. Look at the RRP $149!

That last one looks like the same one I got in February 2010 was only £20 brand new from Ebay and he had plenty for sale. Not sure if he has now though.... The sellers Ebay name is finestcomputers and deals in Commodore stuff, mainly Amiga http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/finestcomputers

Might be worth asking him if he can get anymore?

Still cheaper than new, but the new old offers 13 months warranty.

Got the unit two days ago. Found then out that I did not have the enclosure nor the cables anymore that I thought I still had in my closet.  Ordered a cable and an eclosure and will report back as soon as I got everything set up. I am sorry for the delay. For the reader unit, I would say it is brand new. I will hook it up to my old PC this afternoon and give it a spin.

Cheers,
T.

Now I got the enclosure as well. Not exactly what I expected. It has a fan that is as loud as a Space Shuttle engine. 8O So I am going to void the warranty and take care of this damn fan soon.

Back to the topic: I had the card reader hooked up to an x86 Linux box. It worked great! Fast, quiet and all dinky. As soon as I get the SCSI to Falcon cable from the UK - ordered, shipped, location is somewhere in a customs bin :? - I'll hook it up and give it a test drive with the Anodyne benchmark. Got already a brand new Transcend 8GB SDHC card for it. Wasn't cheap though. We'll see how fast this thing will go. Right now my no-name 16GB SDHC card (via IDE to SD adaptor) is awfully slow when writing. But I paid only $14 for it so that is to be expected I guess.

Cheers,
T.

PS The unit was indeed brand new. In my experience you know when you can smell brand new electronics. Know what I mean?
