Would be nice with a kickstarter project to fund a purchase of the rights to TOS/GEM.. but I doubt it would ever happen.
I'm not even sure who owns the rights to it...

hmm, I'm not sure why we would buy the right to TOS/GEM when we have better, still developed OS (freeMiNT, EmuTOS) with nicer look (XaAES/MyAES) :)

the only reason would be a compatibility core, but even Klaz's patches are running on CT63 etc.. so this really isn't an issue for new programs, Magic might be nice to have as it's more usable on low spec machines.

And as you say Cyprian there are also many many patches to the original TOS anyway almost making it completely new anyhow!

Getting back to the topic, somewhat, I felt the same way about getting Amiga Forever just to see what Amiga games are like. Maybe it's cause I got the cheper $10 version but man most of those games are dogs. The graphics on them are terrible and worst of all the gameplay is gernally bad. There's no instructions on how to play those games except on how to get pass the cracktro screens. I still have to download the good games like Chaos Engine or anything from Pysgnosis which are the same thing as the ST versions only with mod music & hardware scrolling.

Ugh, I never have any good experiences with anything with a Commodore badge.

its a bit unfair compare old TOS (which isn't developed since 1993) with still developed Amiga OS. Lets try up to date OS like MyAes/MiNT.

I was talking about Workbench 1.3!!! ;)

But I do agree there are more modern OS for Atari but those are kind of seperate projects and not from Atari themselves.

just got an A1200 and its great, the addition of IDE and PCMCIA sure let a 68k machine communicate with the modern world. wish an equivalently cheap ST setup could do the same.

the amiga 1200 is pretty straight forward concerning the enhancement needed to communicate with modern PCs.

A huge 8 or 16 gb CF card on an IDE2CF card, a blizzard or an ACA board with 32mb of ram, whdload, and you're done.

In parallel, i have a huge amount of troubles with my STF and STE both being 1040, STF with 1mb of ram, and my STE having 4mb of ram.

Both have a bad chip, meaning that using a hard drive is a source of problem, not counting that my STE use a TOS 1.98 french, which is a very rare tos release. The only other guy i know having this revision is shredder on this forum.

* if i want to correct the hard drive problem, i must find a new good chip, it's a nonsense quest, because it is very rare.....
* About the TOS 1.98, i should dump it with my eprom burner (i'll do that thursday evening).

The amiga has none of these troubles, it has some lacking part, but with the required hardware, it works.

wow, are you joking? :)

from my point of view workbench 1.3 looks terrible, like a pizza...

definitely GEM (with his professional look) from design and usability side was light years better than Workbench 1.3 (which looka like a toy )

Think of Workbench as a wonky old shed at the bottom of the garden, and GEM as a purpose built workshop!

SOLUTION: I've a 1200 and there's no reason games shouldn't load from its disk unless the system is faulty or stuff hasn't been installed properly. Workbench has more features than TOS and is reliable, though TOS is lean and pre-installed in ROM.

Software called Relokick will allow the A500 software to run by and large. But the 1200 is like the STe in that respect in that not everything will load. And as for copying, try a null modem cable with serial software, and transfer from ADF on the PC to floppy on the 1200.

Many games on the Amiga were bad but others were stellar, beating equivalent ST versions by miles due to custom chips. It's still a good machine and I recommend one last try.

Having the rights to the original TOS could be useful in creating bug-fixed "original" versions to use for stock hardware used for games and the like. Also at the end of the day Mint is Not Tos. I personally would welcome a new ROMable TOS version for for both standard hardware along the lines of FireTOS. If the sources were opened up, it would allow further improvement to things like the VDI, and more things to be incorporated, ASCII editor, TrueType, PCL etc.. I'd take that over Mint, truth be told.

Didn't Medua Systems purchase the rights for use in the Milan 040?

If you have an Amiga with an IDE hard drive it's easy to xfer between that and PCs with selectable IDE PIO mode in the BIOS, I did this with my old A1200 HDD and using WinUAE was able to copy the entire contents of the partitions to HD images on the PC, so now my old A1200 runs in WinUAE, but far more stable. As for the differences with GEM and Workbench, I never owned an ST with a hard drive so I can't really say which I prefer.
Also, back in the 90s my mate and I made up a custom Parallel cable for files transfer between Amigas using a tool called "amiga turbo net", it was very fast, perhaps this method would work between an Amiga and a PC (with parallel ports) running WinUAE?
I think it's obvious despite what's been said already that the amiga had far more games released for it that were HD installable out of the box, which was just as well given how many floppies some came on haha..
