90 degree rotated screen acceptable for a conversion?

Postby Anima » Thu Apr 21, 2016 11:45 am

Just a short question about arcade conversions.

Would it be acceptable to have a 90 degree rotated screen for an arcade conversion? So that you need to turn your TV or monitor to have the correct display for the game. So like having a physical 200x320 resolution?

I doubt that this could be an option?!

Interesting Anima! I'm guessing a Japanese shooter of some sort? Falcon?

Quite a few flat panel VGA screens can do this, might be a bit much turning a TV or CRT monitor on its side though :)

I would find this pretty cool, but it sure would be awkward for some people :)

Exactly .. I have a few games on the Ouya that do this. Mostly unplayable unless you turn the monitor.....I dislike doing this.

There's no certain project actually. However, many arcade games use this orientation and a direct conversion would be quite awkward without having the original screen size. Especially the gameplay would be more or less different. This probably depends on the game but the orientation was chosen for a reason.

Were these games written as horizontal scrollers?

So I guess that idea is not an option at all. Understandable.

If you would market it more as a demo (than some people can try to play), than a game, I think it would be more acceptable. :-)

i would not mind at all. I really only play games on my Falcon, and I have a monitor stand that can be easily rotated, so it's not too much of a problem for me at least. If the game is 10x better in portrait vs landscape, I am sure others will say it's worth the extra step.

Awesome idea! Many screens can be rotated anyway (if we're talking VGA/falcon).
Ain't no space like PeP-space.

MMy old HP 19 inch LCD is on a stand and easily rotated 90 degrees (in fact this is how I have it right now when used as a second screen on my PC. Goes next to the 27 incher, it's about the same height when on its side)

No problem at all, I do it often when playing shmups on DC/PS2/Mame, etc.

Sounds like a fun thing to do, as long as a landscape mode is also offered.

Also if it motivates Anima to do something new :)

Yes, it is ok if there is fallback for those who cannot rotate their displays.
Maybe a custom video mode with black borders but keeping the desired pixel ration is also an option?
